I finally found the problem out (with my ati drivers... I don't know how nvidia drivers are): I had to compile agpgart as a module in my kernel (or remove it totally, your choice) so that the ati drivers could directly load their own agpgart in memory.
I suppose it would also work for nVidia cards, as long as the drivers load their own agpgart.

Hope this helps anyone who had my same problem...

On a related note, for any one else who is having trouble with installing ATI drivers, please read this link, it's ATI's Driver Release Notes. Information in this file may not appear in printed documentation or online help. Section 2 of the document talks specifically about installing the driver, kernel customization, enabling AGP support, along with other very important information on getting acceleration to work.
