well i am building my parents a pc and i am wondering which cpu would be better. there bothg around the same price on the egg but i see that there are two different core types for the 55 one which is about $50 more. soo which one? i am looking at getting it this weekend.

If you get the FX-55 make sure you are getting the 90nm core not the 130nm. You know for a little more money you could pick up a dual core processor that would most likely last your parents a lot longer and would have signifigant performance increases. However, thats entirely up to you.

whats the difference between the 130 and the 90? i was gunna go for the duel core but as far as my finaces are i cant afford it. i found the 4000 for $127 and the fx for the same price but the fx is the 130 nm

well it really dosent matter, all the pc has to do is look pretty and function. i would put a socket a in there but i am not that mean :)
my mom plays games and edits some photos everyonce in a while and my dad just stoies stuff on it so i just need it to better then what they have (a 1.3Ghz duron)

you mean your mom plays games? wish mine was that awsome.

I just scored a 4000 from the Egg OEM for $109 USD. Putting it in a PVR server that will fold of course. It won't OC with the board but later I can drop it in another board if needed.

Do your parents know you're getting that much overkill for a processor? If they're so content with spending at least x on a computer get them a big monitor, or put in an Opty 145 and splurge on yourself. Seriously, your parents are never going to know the difference.

lol i know :) this is a preasent for them and my little brother for christmas. my lttile brother use to play pc games but i dont know any more. they have no idea what i am putting in it but what ever i do when it is not active will be folding :)

It's a good opportunity to scarf up on the high end stuff. Put it in a RS482 or 6150 based MATX board and it'll serve there needs. Don't skimp on cooling or PSU if you/they later want to bump it with a DX10 video card :santa: As for overpowered CPU, just set it up with cool and quiet that way the power is there when they need it.

well this is what i have for them so far:

rosewell 500 watt psu
pqi pc-3200 1 gb (2x512)
dvd burner os some sort i forgot lol

also looking at a
aqua mingate water cooler
Nvidia Geforce 7300 GT
2x 250 GB HDD
silverstone case

some of the stuff is coming out of my system as i complete it.
the mobo is also something i am wondering about. i have a asrock 939duel that i can use. it worked fine for me i just wanted something with a bit more tuning for o/cing

First off, dump that PSU. Those have serious reliability problems. During my time in the computer world I've seen to many of those units take out entire systems. Go for something more solid like a Forton, OCZ, Silverstone, or even an Antec. I wouldn't waste my money on that Aqua Minigate water cooler when you could get about the same performance off an air cooler like a Thermalright Ultra 120.

I've been using it for the past 4 months and no problems yet :) but if your sure i also have a aspire 500 watt that I've had for several years that i used with the asrock board after i removed it from my old sempron system. i am not look for performance for this PC more cool and quiet and i mean quiet! not as quiet as a passive cooling system but SOMETHING not as loud as the jet engine they have! i mean i can have be standing outside an hear this thing!

I would'nt risk it on either PSU. They are really 350Watt psu that will be pulled down easily. As Inkfx said FSP, OCZ, Silverstone or Seasonic is the way to go. You don't need the fancy stuff, just the good 400-600W units. Bling is of no use and the modular ones are just another connection to get in the way of suppling power. I use mostly FSP in the 300-450watt range depending on the system mostly 400-450 in my DC systems. The lower 300-350W stuff is in folding rigs with low end video and a single drive.
