so is the fx 5200 but geforce 3 wipes the floor with that

A few upgrades ago, I went from a geforce 3 to a 5200. The 5200 was marginally better, but definatly an improvment. Kinda sad huh :p

As for the original question, I think a 5600 would be a nice step up from a geforce 3.

I upgraded from a gf3 ti 200 to a 5600u fc and there was a huge difference. I would highly recomend getting the ultra flipchip over the non ultra if you can. I have a gainward golden sample that I run at 425/850 (400/800 stock) that I love.

The FX5200 would be better than the Gf3 except that it lacks compression. Its core is more powerful, meaning AF and nice filtering dont take a large hit, but large textures, high resolution and AA will kill the FX, brining the Gf3 ahead. The 64bit FX5200 is about 2/3 the speed of a gf3, while the 128bit one should be close in most things. The 5600 will win in almost every situation.

Not true, the 5200 would just be blasted appart at every point by the gf3. LMAO a geforce 3 does even get more points in 3dmakr '03 and that while it is taking the points penalty for not supporting dx9. A Ti500 IS faster than a 5600, period.
