Is there such a thing?

I was thinking of maybe picking up an LCD for my new comp.

I hear that 15 inch lcds have the basically same viewing area as a 17 inch crt, but I also read about ghosting ect while playing games b/c the pixels can't update fast enough for the game.

Whats your experience with LCDs and games?

And can you recomend any specific brand and models?

*edit*

Well... I was looking at them today in compusa, and in windows they look f'n fantastic I think... compared to what I use now at least.

I found this 17 inch LCD for only 500 bucks at BJ's Wholesale Club.

Envision EN-7100e LCD. Got 8/10 review at Cnet and editors choice, and good review at ZDNet as well, so I might go and pick it up, bring it home an see how it plays, and if its bad I can probably return it.

But I'd still like your input :)

Well...Unless you want to cough up some coin, CRT's IMHO are still the way to go for gaming.

The pixel latency is probably the single largest issue when it comes to analog LCD displays for gaming. There is a way around this. It involves having both a decent 3D video card and a Digital LCD Display. What makes this different from analog LCD's is that they are both digital and will use a DVI connector instead of the traditional VGA HD-15 connectors.

This digital combination allows your PC to drive the Pixels in a defferent manner than analog and eliminates the latancy issue.

The second consideration is that most LCD's look best in their native resolution. For example, most 15" LCD's are set per pixel to drive 1024X768. If you run them in other resolutions you might see distortion in images.

That's my point! Your best solution if you really want to go LCD is to upgrade one at a time...I would take a look at Dell (of all places). They run 20% off sales monthly and I would look at this model
Dell Link

It has DVI capabilty (since you would already be shelling out bucks, now would be the time to plan for the future) and you can upgrade to a Video Card with DVI out later. At least you wouldn't be limiting your options this way...

The $799 for the dell - 20% (when it goes in sale) would put it in the price range of most analog 17" LCD's. Hope this helps!

Thats when my budget goes splat into the wall lol....

The reason I asked was b/c I found a 17 inch lcd for 500 bucks..

When do the sales usually run?

And what do you think it'll be like for the lcds in like 2 years?

I'm MAINLY plannin the LCD for college... like I didn't want to spend a lot on a CRT then get an LCD later, but the technology might improve an prices drop... hmm...

What I'm worried about buying online is dead pixels and getting a replacement....
