I recently baught an AMD Athlon 1.2 gig 256 mb RAM GeForce 2 GTS 64 mb RAM - VIA motherboard (Soltek)

I've got occasional lockups ! These lockups occur when playing an mp3, surfing the web, using programs and playing games. Well... in general... they happen anytime...

I've looked at the FAQ from NVidia and it says this problem could be related to the IRQ's.

I've checked my IRQ's on startup,... wrote em down and here they are:

DEVICE CLASS ----------------------------------------------IRQ

IDE Cntrlr---------------------------------------------------------14
Serial Bus Cntrlr------------------------------------------------10
Serial Bus Cntrlr------------------------------------------------10
Multimedia Device----------------------------------------------9
Multimedia Device--------------------------------------------11
Multimedia Device----------------------------------------------9
Multimedia Device----------------------------------------------9
Network Cntrlr--------------------------------------------------10
Network Cntrlr--------------------------------------------------11
Display Cntrlr---------------------------------------------------11

As you can see... some devices use the same IRQ... wich could be a problem in some cases (so i've read).
I hope with this information somebody can help me put each device on a different IRQ.

If you think this is not my problem... please tell me what you think it is.

The problem is not IRQ related - IRQ 11 is a known sharing IRQ (as are 3 and 5).

I would see the problem to be borne to AGP voltage or AGP mode. Try upping the voltage to remove the problem or alternatively decrease the mode of AGP to 2x

I'm looking to fix this problem for 3 months now (since I baught it). The people at the store where I baught my pc don't find the problem and don't seem to care. So this forum is my only backup.

I really appriciate you guys are helping me !
You guys are great! Really
But unfortunately I have already tried putting AGP to 4x in BIOS and even disabled it. Both don't make a difference. :(
I can only enable and disable the 4x option in BIOS. There's no 2x. People say that this doesn't even matter... that there's no difference between them. I know there's an option in my GeForce settings for 1x, 2x and 4x and I leave it at "auto-configure". I tried changing that to 4x but it decreases my framerate. :/

And... I cant change my cards in other slots cuz I have only one slot left and I'm unable to put a card in there or the ventilator from my Geforce card would not be able to get air.
And I need to leave my GeForce card there because it's closer to another bigger ventilator.
Sometimes my CPU got to 62 degrees.
I already have 2 very BIG ventilators in my pc so I decided to leave my pc case open. This helps and lowers the temperature to about 55 - 57 degrees. Is this still too hot maybe ? Could the heat cause the lockups ?
If the IRQ's are not my problem... could it be a conflict between the cards ?
When I look at my system manager I get a warning sign for my audio card. It's already installed but the system manager says that the software for it is not installed. Maybe I installed the wrong software ? I'll have to look into this.

Hey there:

I've been posting similar problems with my GeForce 3 on an Iwill KK266-R board. By the way, my processor - 1.2 GHz Athlon (266). Please see Post "Help. Computer freezing." you can go to that post an see the things that I have done to try to help. With the case cover off, I have been stable. However, I have done other things too - don't know which has helped. when I feel like I will make no more changes to config, drivers, etc. and everything seems to be working, I will put cover back on and see how it goes. Strange thing is this - my computer worked fine for a while, before all this happened. So I don't know where it started.

What heat sink and fan are you using? I am using the heat sink and fan that AMD ship with their "boxxed" version. This may be inadequate and may be a next step if problem continues.

Good Luck!

I don't know what heatsink and fan I'm using. How can I know ?

Sysoft Sandra (benchmarking program) tells me that there are disabled host controllers detected, that the system monitor device is known to vary and that the SMBIOS/DMI settings may be inaccurate.

This might be the problem... help me fix these things please.

you wouldt happen to be running win2k would you?
** win2k reg patch ftp://ftp.asus.com/pub/asus/misc/utils/amdagp.zip **
load that on if you are... :)

My heat sink/fan came with processor - boxed version. Heat sink is silver and small fan is on top. Can you use bios or via software to check you CPU and system temperatures? You may want to try running the computer with cover off to see how it performs. Just some thoughts. Don't know what to make of those errors - Sorry.

good luck

I leave the case open (as I mentioned before) ! This makes about 3 - 5 degrees difference to my CPU. I'm running the software to see my cpu temperature right now and it's 53 degrees (lower than when I play games).
i get chk files after the lockups and its different everytime.
Last time I got a lockup after about 5 minutes of playing Clive Barker's Undying.
I got a chk file... opened it in notepad and there was a very long text. The end was this:

please guys... don't give up yet. I need to get this fixed. :/

Just a question. Did somethinig tell you there was a chk file, or did you just know to look for it - this is new to me. In what directory was it located?

I bet you get close to 60C when running games, which is borderline - this may be the problem for lock ups. You might want to try a new hs/f.

Also, have you tried disabling most of your PCI cards through windows' Device Manager? (for instance, your sound card, since you were getting the error). If the system is stable, you can then add devices one at a time and see how your system performs. You may be able to localize a problem that way.

Trey

When you save the error at Windows scandisk startup after you had a lockup you get a chk file onto your hd.

yes I've tried disabling my audio card. I still experienced lockups. When I play my pc reaches about 57 degrees. Since I leave my case open the CPU temerature doesn't rise above 60 anymore. I didn't try disabling my graphics card yet. But if I do that... I won't be able to test my games.
