Hi,

I recently used articlean 1 & 2 to clean my GPU and unfortunately some spilled over the sides of the main chip which caused the black material that frames the GPU (thermal tape/pad?) to buckle and start to disintegrate.

My question is, do I need this material? I am working with a Dell XPS Gen 2 laptop with a 7800 GTX Go vid card.

Would it be safe to remove it and apply Artic Cooling MX-4 to the main chip only?

Thank you for any help you can provide! :attn:

Yup, you can remove the junk around the chip and just apply MX-4. That will work fine. It's probably part of the original thermal pad they used, that just overlapped the chip. Regardless of what it is, I wouldn't worry about removing it.
