So, I bought this girl a car and then 4 days later she broke up with me via facebook status... ANYWAYS.... Long story short, she feels bad about taking the car and wants to pay me back. I have $600 coming in shortly (hopefully more later) so I feel like upgrading.

Here is my current system:
e5200 [email protected]
EP45-UD3L lga775 sata2 ddr2 board
4gb ddr2 ram (666mhz)
60gb vertex2 ssd (for the os), 1.5tb storage drive
radeon 4850

Now, i've been itching to upgrade for a bit now, but was only going to get something that can help me hold off until i can skip lga1155 altogether... like a q9600, one of the extreme edition lga775 quad cores.

So here are my options as i see them. Please help:
1) Buy a Q6600 for ~$80 that benchmarks at stock what my 50% oc'ed cpu does edit: nvm
2) Buy one of the fastest lga775 quads (q9650 here on forums for $250)
3) Bite the bullet, get a decent 1155 computer, with sata3, ddr3, and a fast(er) ssd
4) Get a good video card, hold off on everything else until 2011 drops
4) Don't upgrade and just wait until 2011 drops to a reasonable price
5) Tell the ex to keep the money and try to get back with her
6) Other

tldr: don't buy your gf a car

#1 NO

#3 YES, but screw the faster SSD (negligible difference in perceivable performance), use that money for a better video card...
#4 NO
#4? Not a bad idea but #3 is better bang for your buck
#5 Hell NO, and if it was me, I'd repo the car AFTER I got the money because my name would have been on that title to begin with...

3).

Get the mobo/ram/cpu/PSU... maybe case and cooling solution?

Wait for the video card, new ones are coming out shortly... you will be pissed if you buy one now.

i just noticed the two 4's. oops.

going to a sata3 drive won't make much of a difference then? (i thought it's 2x the transfer rate)
what are the new video cards coming out? when?

+1 for King107s' #3.
Get a nice fast computer you can play with now.
When upgrading to GF 2.0 later, you'll not have the money for socket 2011 as GF 2.0 is a proven monetary absorbent.

Sounds better than my ex-wife.

When she took my car that I paid for with my money and I put my money into being fixed. (new transmission, new brake lines, new wheel bearings, new altenator, new water pump + thermostat, new shock absorbers...) Then she moved in with another man, they got evicted, and the landlords had the car scrapped...
(edit: She also took our rent and used it as a security deposit on their place and I nearly got evicted myself)

tldr: Don't marry a :censored:

I'd go with King 107's version of number 5. Then you take what you have from the sale of the car + the $600 and you buy a hardcore LGA2011 system with a 3960X and a Revodrive 3 and 2 7970s.

Getting the car back and the 600 bucks aren't really legally related. BUT, it's possible she could come after you for the 600 bucks in small claims court at a later time and a judge would say that the 600 bucks was null and void since you took the car back, making you return the 600. Might be safest to just repo the car, which I would have done already if it were me, and flip it for a computer and forget the 600 bucks.

I'd also repo it without notice :bday:.

"What's that tow truck doing in my driveway?"

Could always claim it was repayment of bills they were mutually responsible for and that she is filiing suit as retaliation for repoing the car... judge would throw it out in a heart beat.... Been divorced too, been through a lot of this kind of crap already.

Well if you wanted to play it that way you could just say 'what 600 dollars' and that'd get it thrown out too if there's no signed awknowledgement that said 600 dollars changed hands.

i just wanted to let all you guys know that the car was under $1000... i'm not going to repo it, as i did put it in her name. and a gift is a gift. in fact, she didn't want me to buy it for her in the first place, so i most likely won't even accept the money from her anyways... so let's end all this relationship and car advice and get back back to the topic of the upgrade:

- i picked up a p8p67 evo rev3 + 2600k off the forums here for $375. and 8gigs of ram + hyper 212 evo from my local computer store.
- i now need a video card... and want to spend about $150 or so. I NEED IT TO BE QUIET. Suggestions? I don't know where to start. something along the lines of a 550ti, but how do i make sure it's quiet?

tldr: i need video card NOT exgf/car advice

Can you spend more than 150??
You're going to make your GPU your bottleneck causing possible sadness and desire for a better GPU.

< 150 I'd say 6870. Preferably a 6950 or 6970. Or 7970.
Quietness comes down to the cooler on the card, the fan speed, and a lot of other things. You have cards with coolers like the Direct CU II, from ASUS, that give you the option of running low RPM and being mousefart quiet while still cooling well for a standard clock, or running high RPM and being loud and keeping a very high oc very cool. You pay a few $ more for a card with a better cooler on it. Again $150 kind of puts you into a corner. You definitely want to avoid blower/squirrel cage style fans if you want silence.
