pheonix award bios and win 98 is that enough info

sounds more like a software problem then a hardware problem. there is a update for windows shutdowm problems check your updates out also there is a one click shutdown at techtv search for shutdown and you will find the article, it basicly makes a shortcut you run in your tray and it should help out as it shuts my machine off in a second.

goodluck

when i try to shut down it doesnt make it pass the windows is shutting down

I had the same problem with ME when I first started bumping up the FSB. When I went in large steps, it screwed up. When I used 1 or 2 MHz steps, it behaved.

I've also noticed that if I'll start and restart it at a given speed at least twice (usually do it a couple of more times just for the hell of it) and then just play with it there, it seems to behave better at that speed.

Now that I think of it, ME also gave me problems when I transferred my HD from it's Celeron 400 machine to this PIII 733. Don't know why Win would give a damn about speed changes, but it certainly seems like it does.

I tried the shutdown updates and nada. Any more suggestions?

That update should work unless your win install is crud. I used to have that board but it sucked soooo bad that i replaced it.

also check your bios for an option for shutdown. On my gigabyte board there's an option for soft shutdown / instant power off / 5 sec. delay or something like that. Try messing with those settings just for fun. Might help. Might blow up. Who knows until you try.

Have you tried enabling fast shutdown in windows?
If not here is how.

To work around this problem, enable the Fast Shutdown feature:
1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System tools, and then click System Information.

2. On the Tools menu, click System Configuration Utility.

3. On the General tab, click Advanced.

4. Click the Disable Fast Shutdown check box to clear it, click OK, and then click OK again.

This information was taken from the ms website here:

do you have a nic installed in your system, if you do this may be the problem. I had a nic installed in my older Celery system and it would keep the system from shutdown, had to disable everytime i had to shutdown, very annoying
