You don't need sata power connectors to power up the board. Just use the 24pin mobo + 4/8pin mobo and see if you can boot into the bios. Only thing that will happen is there's no harddrive/OS, but the board will power up if it's not dead. Then you'll know if it's the board that is defective or the power supply.

I was forgetting you don't technically *need* a hard drive to see if the mobo is working xD
I'll be getting up early on Saturday to give it another whack - despite how much extra effort it is, I kinda hope it's just the motherboard that's buggered (since we have a replacement)! If he PSU is bricking it then I'll need to wait for a new one to arrive (and my brother (the owner of the pc) will be P.O'd xD)
