i just built my system in a chief tec case, its an xp 1700, dragon plus mb. i also ordered 4 of the panaflows that flow 24cfm, i figured two in and two out. but now i am debating between the glaciator and the thermalright sk6, any suggestions, i have read the reviews and stuff, but now i am looking for personal prefrences. anything has got to be better than the retail heatsink and fan i have on there now. thanks in advance for your suggestion

You asked for an opinion, here is mine. Either is an outstanding HSF.

The Glaciator has an integral fan which requires severe modding if you want to change it. The stock fan, however, is pretty good and it does a great job. The only drawback is that it has a high pitched whine which is uncomfortable to listen to after a while.

The SK6 can be bought with virtually any 60mm fan so you can tailor it to your needs. I've run them with 23CFM and 40CFM fans, so you decide how much noise you want to endure.

Before I switched back to Intel, I ran a SK6 with a 26CFM Sunon on a T-bird 1400 and it was for me the ideal combination, competitive performance and low noise levels.

Thermalright is starting to ship their new design now, I think they call it the AX-7. I can't remember. Bah, my memory is gone.

Lyle, you have a point. The Glaciator is better with the Delta 38 against the Glaciator II, it still losses by 0.02 C/W (This is taken from the Heatsink Rating), I think the best you can do to for it is the Delta 50, or fan adapters w/ Delta 80, but thats kind of overdue, and you spent more money on fans to a heatsink then you did on the heatsink.. :D

Glaciator 2 has my pick.

Yodums

The glaciator 2 has served me well, but now it is time 4 me to move on to H2O, and higher clock speeds:)

i personally like the sk6, never heard anything bad about it, altho there are some newer copper coolers that would perform better. just depeneds what your willing to spend, and what u wanna gain from this.

If you plan to go with an high OC, well, I suggest you to go with a ThermalRight SK6 with a Delta50Cfm (60x60x38mm), but you have to use the fan @7v, coz @12v is really annoying!
With the same Cpu @1.6Ghz, take a look to the Signature, I got temps @full load, with the Box that works all day (24/7) never above 40 degree C, not so bad ;)

I've always liked Alpha's, even though their later models may not be as competitive as some of the other manufacturer's models. My first one was the MUC6035, got it right from Ed, Skip, Joe and the boys when they were selling them for awhile. Hell, I've personally kept Alpha and Alcoa in business. Their workmanship is always first class and that means a lot to me.

So, Glaciator or SK6? Pick 'em...

Well, Alpha's HS are really good from all points of view, I've to agree with you, I've had a Pep66 and I was really satisfied by the cooling performance.
The only prob about the Pal8045, like for the Swiftech MC462 or MCX462, is about the retain system, that is really safe, but sometimes there isn't enough room around the Socket to fit properly, but in according to the Mobo Compatibility List present on the Alpha website, it fit without probs on the Soyo Dragon+, for more info take a look here ;)

thanks for your oppinions. i just ordered the sk6 with a delta 38cfm fan from newegg. hopefully it will get me off of the 48c temps i am getting right now under full load at 133.

Be sure to mount the sk-6 right. Some have, myself included, mounted it over the cam and saw a rise in temps. Get the left side of the sink even with the cpu and it will go on right. Something you can also do is put a rheostat on the fan and adjust the rpms to the dba level you can live with. Seldom do I have to run it on high and my temps stay below 40c full load at 23c ambient.

i agree w/ Yodums, i mod things for MORE POWER! not less.

Come on Guys, you know how loud are Delta's
I've used for a couple of days the 50Cfm 60x60x38 and with the door of the room closed, and it was still really annoyng!

Regarding the Glaciator 2... I've never noticed any whine from the fan. I've removed the fan and tried running a YS Tech 40cfm, and that sounded like a vaccuum cleaner! When I put the old fan back in, I slopped some silcione on the bottom, because I found that if the fan was loose it would rub the fins of the heatsink and produce a vibration hum. The only difficulty with swapping out the fan in a Glaciator is that the fan has to have no frame... so you have to cut up the plastic to get it to fit. I run mine with a 2nd high volume fan in a side panel duct. I don't think a fan adpater with a larger fan will do much good since 1)the Glaciator and Glaciator 2 are designed to have the fan sit internally, not on top, and 2) both of these hsf's are heavy and adding weight and height to the heatisink will only put more stress on the socket.

No experience with the SK6, but seems like its one of the best if not the best. Highly configurable fan possiblities, too.

The heatpipe mentioned above and also the Volcano 7+ (note the plus) are in the same performance category and price range.

No way dude! I love the big sounds and stuff coming out of my CPU, also indicates me when something is dying, LOL... :D

i cant stand loud noise, especially when im folding
while i sleep. i'd go with a glaciator II. i love mine.
quiet as heck too with the same cooling power and it
is a lot cheaper.
