What file or directory is in control of the desktop. Something funky happened before I reinstalled, and no icons appear anymore, and I can't rightclick the desktop to access the menu that normally comes up. Is there a way to reset this file/directory config to the original?

Anyone ever have this problem?

The config files for gnome are hidden in your home directory, I think under the directory .gnome

Check that you have all the GNOME windowmanagers installed ie. Enlightenment, Sawmill (or is it sawfish? can't remember the new name).

Remember, GNOME needs a 'true' window manager to work.

Duh silly me. From 1.4 onwards the window manager is integrated into GNOME, I think.

Beelzebub, if you're logging in as root, don't. When I install new linux boxes, Nautilus (the file manager for Gnome), won't start up when you start gnome when you're logged in as root. If you try logging in as another user, you should see your icons.

Also, if you want to login as root, just click the gnome menu, click run, and type nautilus. Your icons will be there then.
