Something I learned today from the good folks at Arctic Silver..."Goo Gone", while fine for cleaning "non-mating" parts of the CPU or heatsink, it should NOT be used to clean the contact area of the heatsink, as it is oil-based and will supposedly fill-in the valley areas on the bottom of the (presumably unlapped) heatsink.

I don't claim to be the expert here at all, I'm just passing along the recommendations of the Arctic Silver people.

FYI, for those interested.

I've used goo gone on several occasions and haven't had any problems. Just make sure to wipe off the excess and let it dry for a few minutes before using it.

Yeah, I don't think they're necessarily trying to claim that using "Goo Gone" would actually cause you any discernable problems, more that the almost imperceptible oily residue Goo Gone leaves behind will compromise (to some small degree) the effectiveness of the cooling mechanism installed.
