I'm looking for a cheap motherboard to put a Duron 1.0 Ghz in. The board must support both SDRAM and DDR. For now I'll be using SDRAM. Some overclocking capability would be nice too. Is the ECS K7S5A still considered a good board? What about the Shuttle AK31A - does it work with SDRAM? Any other boards I should be considering.

btw, do all Duron 1.0 Ghz CPUs now have the Morgan core?

Thanks!

mobo

The AK31 is all DDR, but its brother the AK32 (I think) is the one with 2 slots of each, sdram and DDR.

The ECS K7S5A uses the SiS 735 chipset, and has 2x DDR slots and 2x SDR slots.

There is also a Jetway board - 866AS I think.

I found an old review of the AK32 and it does accept both SDRAM and DDR. It also seems to have a full set of overclocking features which gives it an advantage over the ECS K7S5A.

Two things I'm wondering about the AK32:
1. The chipset is the KT266? Isn't there a newer KT266A because there were a lot of problems with the original KT266?

2. All I can find on pricewatch is the AK32L. I'm wondering the 'L' means ... different 'lite' version perhaps?

Shuttle.com seems to be down so I can't check there right now.

BTW, love your avatar. DBZ is such a cool show. Not sure where you are but here in the US the Cartoon Network shows DBZ but they have this annoying habit of getting 1/3 or 1/2 through a saga (like Buu) and then start repeats for several months. Never understood why but it sure is annoying.

KT266A is an update to KT266. It will include some additions and bugfixes.

Right. I'm just wondering if the KT266 is considered bad enough that it should be avoided.

My friend runs a Duron on the KT266 - he's never had a problem.
