Hi folks,

I could use some recommendations on a new PSU. My current one is Codegen 350W - came with the case. I know I'll need to change the case too, but don't have enough money for that right now (unless you can recommend good case + PSU combinations for $100). Anyway, for the PSU I got like $80 let's say.
Bigger is better, and I'd like some stability and protections in it if possible... sound lvl not that important, I mean for this money .....
So perhaps not some big brands but a nice cheaper one that can perform well?

Thank you in advance,
Endre.

WELCOME TO THE FORUMS!!!!!!

The answer to your question depends on many factors. What video card are you using? How many fans? What CPU/Mobo combo? Intel or AMD?

If you would like a PSU covering all bases, I would recommend a Fortron Blue Storm 500W PSU.

A guide on choosing PSU's can be found here:-

Good Luck!

MSI 865PE Neo2-V
Intel P4 3.0E GHz (Prescott, 1 Mb cache)
2 x 512 Mb PC3200 Geil Value RAM (2,5 8-4-4) dual channel
40 Gb Seagate Barracuda HDD 7.200 RPM
HIS Excalibur 9600XT Turbo Platinum (500 / 325 - factory)
Codegen 350W PSU (yeah I know)
Pinnacle PCTV Rave (or something like this, got it from a friend but didn't use it yet).

This is the config I have. I might add a DVD-RW and a bigger HDD quite soon, that's pretty much all.

If you have a 12v oriented board, like most are these days except the Asus A7N8X, the Fortron AX500-A is about the price you mention. If you have a 5v oriented board instead (no 4 pin 12v connector), look for the Fortron/Sparkle 530w or the one recommended by jchsatx09.

If you're in Canada, www.vibecomputers.com and www.ncix.com has a good selection of affordable Fortron/Sparkle units.

The whole dilemma ended with me buying an Enermax EG425AX-VE-G-SFMA for $120.
Thanks for the help, hints, explanations - your help was very valuable to me - a hardware noob.

Endre.

Newegg won't ship to central Europe, unfortunately. Yes, I know that site. I ment US $. And we got 25% VAT, too...
Anyway, don't bug me with it. I bought it, that's it, I should be happy that I changed my 300W Codegen. I won't change it anyway, not anytime soon so let me live with it... last thing I need are 'advices' like 'oh you're so fool' and stuff. That's the price here, this should be a decent PSU for me for a while...

This is the first most of us have been made aware of your location... the location field under your screen name was blank, and you never mentioned Europe before in this thread. We couldn't really tell if you were in Canada or not - the Fortron AX500 is $110 up here, close enough to $120 to confuse me at least :p

Anyway, getting rid of the Codegen was a good thing... the Enermax will be a big improvement I think. Enjoy :)

PC Power and Cooling 360W or 410W for under $80. 3 years warranty(good when in budget) and ship worldwide I think. These are excellent power supply and will never let you down.

Didn't know that (about shipping), shipping is a huge problem for us in Hungary (it's like we live on another planet or something) unfortunately. There are so many good hardware deals in the US, unfortunately we don't have access to them. Not even the western Europe ones, usually.

I'm really poor :) so this machine won't change a lot in the following 2 years I am pretty sure (except - hopefully - a larger HDD and a DVD-RW), invested all my money in it in the past good few months to get it, so I hope the Enermax 420W will handle. After that I'll consider the PC Power and Cooling, but perhaps in 2 years we'll have access to Amazon.co.uk or other good online shops so I'll have a wider range of hardware/prices to choose from. :)

The Enermax should hold out for a good long while... I don't hear about too many of them failing. A couple of my friends love theirs. It shouldn't have any problems with adding the occasional DVD burner or hard drive.
