Anyone know of a good email spam/junk mail blocker? Think buying the AVG version with antispam, etc is good app? I know the free version is used by a lot of people here..but the purchable one better? Like is their anti spam any good?

Any good email apps out there (free) that are better than MS's Outlook (comes with Win XP)?

Spambayes is free and highly effective.

While AVG is an adequate AV client, there are equally effective free and ad-free clients available, such as Avast. Look around the forums here for the myriad threads reviewing AV clients.

If you're looking for a straight email client, Thunderbird is quite good, but if you're looking for a comprehensive productivity suite with PDA synchronization, fully-integrated calendar, task lists, notes, contacts and email, there is no substitute for Outlook.

***Edit***

Outlook does not come with Windows XP, but is sold individually or as part of the MS Office suite. Outlook Express (AKA, OE) comes with XP and is pure garbage. Thunderbird is recommended above OE, and has quite good built-in junk mail filters.

***End Edit***

you can try those, or just get gmail its much better and the spam blocker has worked perfectly, over a year not one spam message in Inbox, about 2,000 in junk. I still check my junk mail and nothing I wanted went there. I am seriously shocked myself.

just automatically forwarding everything to gmail should work also.

I (like most people on here) do 'cleanup duty' on my parents PC. After looking looking at their inbox, I knew something had to be done about the spam. I installed this free little program/plugin for Outlook called SpamFighter. It seems to work very effectively and hasn't blocked anything she's needed. I like the fact that it doesn't run continuously in the system tray, it just loads when you start outlook and closes when you are done. It also updates automatically. Not bad for a free app :)

Here's a link if you wanna check it out

another vote for gmail. We just switched our domain mail at work over to google and it is catching on average 200 spam messages a day per user.

Unfortunately, we can't get it to install where I work, as it won't go through our firewall.

Does anybody know another good program that works well with Outlook 2000 and deals with spam well? We tried McAffee, and that was a disaster. Mailfrontier is what we currently use, and it isn't too bad, but they just got bought out and their servers aren't handling challenge mail well at all.

We aren't running exchange.

Hey, Torin.

Have you tried spambayes? It does not "call home", so should not be a problem with your firewall.

Haven't yet, but I'm downloading it now.

Thanks!

I'll report back if it works. Thanks again! :)
