Got my new system up - unstable at 11X200 though - any ideas?

Hi all,

Got my stuff all put together last night and today - the system runs fine at the 2500+ default settings, but if i run it as a 3200+, 3dmark crashes on me.

Here's what's in the system:

AQXDA 0320 2500+ Barton
Vantec Aeroflow HSF
Enermax 431W PSU
Antec Super Lanboy case
NF7-S 2.0
1GB Mushkin Black Level 1 PC3200
Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB
Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro
HD - 80GB WD, 40GB Maxtor
Optical - Plextor 52X, Pioneer DVD

I know the Aeroflow isn't the best HSF around, but I really don' t think the crash in 3dmark is a heat issue - MBM is showing around 39C at idle, and around 45C under load. The temp didn't increase very much at all from OCing to 3200 speeds, only 1 or 2 degrees.

This is my first OC, so I'm not all that sure what to go changing to make it work - any ideas? Can wrong memory timings or something like that cause a crash like that? Do I need to up the Vcore at all? (I'm really not interested in going above 11X200) I believe my RAM is rated 2-3-2 at DDR400 - I have it set to optimal in the NF7 BIOS.

I'd check your voltages - Vcore, Memory, and Video to start. Trying playing around with those.

I'm running a locked 2500+ Barton, PC2700 DDR, and the same motherboard as him... I reached 200x11 with no issues other than having to up the voltage. So, I doubt it's the BIOS.

How much should I increase the Vcore and Vagp? Just one notch I'm assuming?

I just flashed to the 20 BIOS too - I heard that one was the best out of the official Abit ones...

Just keep going up till it works. BTW, I couldn't even boot into Windows until I upped my Vcore and memory... I had to get my Vcore to 1.8v to stay in Windows under folding, and my Memory voltage was bumped .1 or .2. BTW - does 3dmark just kinda 'quit' on you with no errors or anything? Like it just sorta disappears?

my cpu doesnt like 45C. it usually ****s up and crashes right around there.

It works! Upped both by one notch and got 3dmark03 to complete with no problems - CPU was at 45C at the end. I'm probably gonna order an SP 97 just to be safe...

Btw, I scored a 5609 in 3dmark - isn't that kinda low?

Do you have latest drivers installed? 3dmark01 or 3dmark03?

Yup Cat 3.10's, this was 3dmark 03

I don't really care about "playing" 3dmark, just wondering what my score should be... Bottom line is that my primary app, MS Flight Sim 2004, now runs great and looks damn near real, so I'm happy!!

Thanks guys, I'll probably post back when I get my SP-97 and let you know how high I can get it with that...

Try running Prime95 torture test to be sure that your CPU won't crash under heavy load. Your CPU temp looks ok to me. AMD's CPU has high temperature tolerance. Keep it below 60 under load and you should be fine.

How is it that systems run Prime95 for 24hours no problems, but BattleField restarts the computer due to instability? That's my problem with tests like Prime95 Here's my thoughts:

If you play games: fire 'em up. Give them a shot, play for around 30 minutes and see what happens.

If you use Maya: start rendering.

Whatever you use your computer for... do it: if it's stable, then awesome, you are successful. Because honestly - I don't use Prime95 for anything. But I use Maya and BF1942 all the time. Just my humble .02.

Prime95 is a great tool to troubleshoot instability. Its great for testing overclocked Cpus and allot less hassle than running games and applications to see if the system crashes.

my barton was stable under prime95.. i ran it for 24 hours..

thought well its stable.. i opened bf1942 and it went to join a game and it crashed.. so obviously it wasn't.. i had to bump the core volts up a bit and then bf1942 would run fine and prime95 passed as well..

I've been running FS2004 all morning and the CPU hasn't gone above 45C - everything looks perfectly stable to me and man oh man does the sim look good!! (1280X1024X32 4X AA/ 8X AF) I have no idea how I went on so long with the old GF3!

Well crap, I'm getting consistant crashes in this game my roomate has called Beyond Good and Evil while at 3200+, but at 2500 it runs fine... guess I'm gonna order the SP 97 then...

Check your RAM and Video voltages too - sometimes bumping those up a notch will help the stability. So crazy how much of this information one retains after being away from this site for a year. Take it easy,

AGP and Vcore were already upped one notch - guess I could try upping the RAM too... It was locking up with a frozen image and looping sound...

As long as I have the AGP locked at 66Mhz, there really shouldn't be any need up the AGP voltage as a result from OCing the CPU and FSB right? The AGP isn't getting OC'ed at all correct?
