Thanks for the information. For S@H its still about how many GPUs can you run in one rig which often creates issues. So far I've had best results running 2 cards per rig. Been trying to get 3 running together, but one always seems to get to hot.

When I was folding on gpu's, I used to have four Vid cards on a single MB. I found that the best "style" of vid card for packing in the gpu's was the MSI cyclones, which kept the gpu cooler than the more traditional GPU coolers. The cyclones are more open, although you need to have decent airflow through the case to get rid of the heat since the cyclones dump heat back into the case rather than exhausting it out the back. Asus DirectCU video cards also worked well. I would use two 750w PSU slaved to each other for each rig to power the whole rig. Running 4 GTX 460s needed 8 6-pin PCIs.

I used to run 4x8800GTS G92 on K9a2 platinum with single 750W PSU corsair. It was too hot to put in a case so i went caseless and couple of 100CFM fans blowing at them.

If you are going to do multiple cards on one motherboard, the best way is to do it like the bitcoin miners do. Pick up some cheap 1x risers and space the cards out over the top of the motherboard.

Wow. Never realized that the risers are so cheap now. About $4 each on ebay. Yes, spacing them out would definitely help with keeping the temps down. I used to have them all together and temps and fan speeds were sky high.

Wouldn't using a 1x riser hurt performance when crunching?

No - the card doesn't need nearly as much bandwidth when computing as it does when working on graphics.

If you're interested in doing that out, check out this post, it has a lot of useful information about doing 1x risers:
