I'm wanting to see if there is any correlation in maximum overclock speed vs. substrate color. As many know, the old XPs are on brown chips, whereas the newer ones are on green chips. I would like this thread to definitavely answer the question: "Is this just cosmetic?"

So, I would like to see actual comparisons of brown and green XPs. (I wish this info were already in the CPU database.)

I'll be adding my info from my new 1600+ AGOIA (brown) once my 8K3A+ arrives.

Let the comparisons begin.

I think it is mostly a cosmetic issue. As you know most of the green ones are comming out with excellent steppings. So in the long run I like the green ones.

I have an 1800+ AKGKA (I think) and it's brown, but I thought after the 1600+ they were all made brown?

Can't be since my 1700+ Agoga is green.

Must just be the newer but same PR chips that are green.

I have a green AGNGA 'Y'. I pegged it at about 1.67 the other day before my crummy cooling made me go back.

I would like a purple one, however. I think they only sell those ones in Japan, however.

color doesn't matter, but steppings do, and since all the new ones are green, they will probably have better steppings.

i have a green agnga Y running at 1.7ghz with default vcore
would go higher but something in my system is holding me back and i'm not sure what just yet...i know its not the ram tho

The green ones suposedly have to be unlocked differently. I have a green one and can't get it to unlock. I can choose multipliers above my default but not below and this is what doesn't make the normal unlocking work. Can anyone help?

Anyone have a brown AGOIA? That's the stepping on my new 1600+. I'm hoping to hit 1.8 GHz with it.

The green unlock the same,I have done 2 green with no problems with the multi's.You might be grounding somewhere.
I think the green ones offer a little more protection from scratching through to the copper because it feels like a harder coating and even has a more glossy look to it.

that's odd, check this out. I guess I'll have to try again if what you say is true...

Both of mine are Green with green cores same week 0208 :) . What color is your core? What week was it made?

mines a brown core, AGOIA stepping, week 0208 as well. I could post a pic, but it looks just like every other brown XP I've seen. I was just surprised, because I built a system for a friend 2 weeks ago, and his 1600+ was a Green AGOIA. So, the brown really through me for a loop.

Here's the entire code

AGOIA0208XPBW

The XP2200+ is a GREEN AGOIA stepping CPU, that should tell you something.

I also seen an XP1600+ that was GREEN and also had an AGOIA stepping, that should tell you something.

BTW, Green is better since those CPUs are produced on AMDs latest and greatest waffers. AMD will only produce Green wafers as of 2003.

I'm suprised its the same week as mine. It should overclock very well like all the other AGOIA chips I've heard of , keep us posted.

Well it's a tough decision, the green ones are easier to lose in the grass while the brown ones are easier to lose in the mud. I guess I won't be throwing mine around in the backyard unless I somehow get one of them there purple ones *sigh*

I do wonder though, since it's an organic substrate, whether throwing them in a bucket of clothes dye overnight would adjust the colour to one's particular liking. :D

Anyway, I'll let you all know what color mine is and what it does when it turns up.

Another differance:

My new XP2100+ (green of course) Arctic Silver WIPES RIGHT OFF CLEAN!!!

My Brown 1900+ needs to be wiped down with Acetone.

The surface on the brown is MUCH more difficult to clean.

Hehe..

Id rather have some of the green ($$$) stuff than the brown (poop) :) Seriously, I havent ever seen a brown chip. I had a green AFFA 800 TBird that did 1000, and the one in my sig is green too. Who says its not easy being green.
