there is a green led light inside the case that is on that means the computer is in standy mode, however what i am trying to do is get the computer powered on. when i hit the power button it automatically glows orange which means its in standby mode. i want the computer to power on but it wont. i think it may have something to do with the psu but if the motherboard isnt getting power then why would the green led on the motherboard come on?

This has happened with dells before with me but i do not know what to do. contacting customer support is out of the question. please let me know something.

I am just trying to power the computer on with the power button but it automatically goes to standby. Has anyone ever experienced this before if so please tell me how to correct the problem. Thanks in advance.

Well, first off what motherboard is it? Some, like mine, have a light for SLI-ready power or something, that is almost always on.

Second, do you see anything on the monitor when you boot? This sounds like something you could fix with a BIOS tweak.

Third, if you don't see anything on the monitor, try resetting the bios. You'll have to take out the CMOS battery ( a small round disk battery ) and move a jumper over usually, but check your motherboards manual/

It seems more like a bios setting to me than your PSU. If you still suspect your PSU, tell us whether or not all the fans come on, to include the PSU fan, for example. Also, any other instances where a component is obviously getting power would be good to know. Get back to us and we'll see what we can do. Good luck.
