Well, I bought Half-Life 2 today. It's the collector's edition on one DVD.
A little background. I own a terrible DVD-ROM drive from Mad Dog. As usual, it would not read the HL2 dvd.
So, I try to do an install from the net - remember the good old days where you just punched in your HL1 cd key and steam downloaded it, no questions asked, no CD needed in drive? Not anymore. It says 'please insert HL2 dvd in drive'. I do, but of course my MD drive dosen't recognise it and just gives endless activity with some wierd clunking noises, as usual. (Dosen't seem to do this as often under Linux - better drivers? Still does it though)
So I have an idea. I stick the DVD in my laptop, have drive sharing enabled, set up a network, and run the HL2 setup program from the laptop's DVD-ROM. Great, install finishes.
So i go into Steam, and double-click HL2. It brings me to the 'Buy it' page, though the status says 'pre-load complete'. What the heck?
So I go to activate product. I enter the CD key, and hit next. DVD must be in drive. Nice...
So I try mounting the laptop's drive as a network drive. Steam still cannot find it.
What am I to do?! Do I have to buy a new DVD-ROM drive and wait for it to come before I can play the darned game -I BOUGHT-, even though it's already installed?!?!?! What the heck?!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If I do need to buy a new drive, I'm gonna call Sad Smog... Oops, Mad Dog... And demand they give me my money back for their crumby excuse for a DVD-ROM drive. I can hear you saying 'but it's just one drive, RMA it!' I would, but that would take time, and this is the third bad optical drive from them, one of which was the result of an RMA, and I got back a drive with the EXACT SAME PROBLEM I SENT IT IN FOR!
Ahem. ANy ideas how I can get MY game to play? Thanks in advance.
