Hopefully everyone made it to the new year and is reading this message now. If you did not survive the holiday season, please post below.

We have a team challenge coming up. The [H]ord has invited us again this year to compete against them, TAAT, EVGA and I don't know who else. Last year was our first and we started out looking like it was going to be an easy win. Spoiler: We did not win and we got schooled.

The idea behind the race is for each team to find more active members. If you have an idea to reach out to potential teammates, let's hear it. The race is a week long but we would need new folders (or returning folders) to start early so that they can get their passkey and return 10 WU's thus getting their bonus points.

That's the immediate goal. What's your goal for this year? Getting more hardware? replacing old hardware? Setting up a farm? Maybe your goal is to reach a new milestone? 1 billion? 10? 20 billion? Maybe your goal is more competitive. Maybe your goal is to pass @WhitehawkEQ . Maybe your goal is to get into the teams top 10 or the world top 100?

What goals do you have in your sites that you hope to achieve this year?

Happy New Year!

Well, my last goal was to hit top 100 in the team before turkey day which I was barely able to squeak out with my previous cards. Now that this 4070 Super is cranking out 10-12M/day I'm closing in on top 50 pretty fast. Just have to nearly double my current points. Slow and steady...

I had planned on picking up a 50 series card, but I tend to not have great luck over scalpers when it comes to in-demand tech items. We'll see but I'm doubtful. I've been really impressed with this Gigabyte 4070 Super OC as it's SO much quieter than the 3080 Super it replaced, and leagues quieter/cooler than the EVGA 3090 Ti FTW I sold to fund the 4070 Super hahaha. Heck of a lot less power draw too with higher PPD which is an awesome trade-off. I might just grab another one or two of these or the other variants Gigabyte puts out when/if they come back in stock, hopefully the prices drop a bit when the new stuff rolls out.

Don't you mean our and not out?

That comment made me smile. :)

I survived the holiday season, but my brother did not. He passed away on the Saturday between xmas & new years, two weeks after discovering stage 4 pancreatic cancer. This is a glaring example of why we fold.
Wow, so sorry to hear, and yes this is why we do what we do. For those we have lost, for those we might save.

Got my hands on a 2080 super as payment for replacing an oil pump and doing a cat delete on a ram 1500. hopped on eveilbay and that jungle website to order a cheap case and all the components to build a little folding machine in the lower level since it's cool down there even during the summer, nothing fancy just a ryzen 3600x with a b450 wifi mobo and some basic dd4 ram with a 250gig m.2 drive. Should be here by friday so hopfully it'll be a slap it together and get it running before the yearly folding party. I also found a 2080ti f from a former co worker, somehow he managed to yank both power connectors off the board so I pretended it was doomed but told him if I can fix it I'll give it back and he can pay me for my time, as far as the world is concerned it's junk but I'm 100% sure I can fix it, we have shelves full of 6 and 8 pin connectors that we use and I've become quite familiar with solder stations from me not paying attention when setting up my solder machines lol.

Going at this "cold".
Today is Jan. 11, 2025.
The Nvidia GPUs have been announced.
Nvidia claims the 5070 ($549.00) is equal to the 4090 in some games (not necessarily in Folding).
The 5070 Ti is $749.00.
The 5080 is $999.00.
The 5090 is $1,999.00!

If considering a single system with a PSU, a motherboard that can game, and do graphics editing, and stream, and other basic PC stuff (rather than just be a folding platform; what is the "sweet spot" for the GPU in 2025?
Cost of electricity, capital investment, and PPD calculate out to a volume of what is acceptable to each individual according to their personal situations and preferences.
Is it possible that a 5090 will generate 50,000,000 PPD?
Would two 5080 be a better investment that one 5090?

That's a BS marketing claim. It is an apples/oranges comparison & as far as I know, you can't upscale the science. :)

Super interesting question. I'm guessing you could compare folding averages of 2x4080 vs 1x4090 as a starting point.

That is in games but I disagree it's BS. It is getting very expensive to get smaller chips. I know I can't tell the difference between a real frame and a generated frame(DLSS 3). If it prevents choppiness(Boosting FPS, and Image quality) I am all for it. There at least 75 games that DLSS 4. It is going to be the least expensive way to improve graphics in the future. I think we pretty much have to live with it whether we like it or not. I am looking forward to taking a gander at it.

Having said that it is a science card. You have to be a pretty hard core rich gamer to use a 5090 for gaming...So that only include half of the crazy folks on this site.:D

1 5090 will save electric. It is riskier tho in case it fails. I lean toward 1 5090 if I find out they can hit 50Mill. If it is only 40 Mill well a 4080 Super can do 20 so I might go with a 5080 or 2. I wonder if we reach the limit of a second slot's bandwidth with 2. At the 50mill level instead of 4 4000's running in the summer I could do just the 1 5090. This is all predicated on how much trouble it is to get them. (Or how much we get for at tax refund)+(How much we Fear our spouse) :chair:

Assuming the 5090 is 20% more powerful than the 4090 I estimate it will do 27.5M PPD Average. The 5070 should preform more like a 4080. Guessing around 16M PPD.

Ape Goals for 2025:

1-2 5090s Depends if I build a system for my wife to game on. This could expand up to 4, but i doubt it.
18 GPU Farm. We currently have 13 GPUs dedicated to folding. I'm going to condense them into 3 x 6 GPU systems. Filling in the empty slots with 5070Ti's. This will all depend on what the most efficient card ends up being. I'm guessing, as with the 30 and 40 series, its going to be the 5070Ti.
Discover 0 point energy to power all this, lol. Cant you build a nuclear reactor out of smoke detectors?

Yeah I see that the 4090 isn't that much better than a 4080 Super on Linux. They do have a 5000 series Laptop up already. (8-9Mill)Windows. I thought the 4090's did 30 Plus. Gonna rethink even getting one now. @WhitehawkEQ what do you think ?

That is why I plan on just getting one for my main PC. Unless there is some type of miracle, it wont be all that impressive.

Revised 5090 estimate using Linux numbers is 28,432,295
