Trying to recover when formatting.....that's bad. Run scandisk with thorough setting to verify your hd isn't taking a poop on ya.

If it says 'trying to recover allocation unit XXX' that means the drive has sustained some form of damage, and by the way it sounds, you might need a new drive if you can't even get a format done so you can scandisk it.....

You may be out of luck on this one.....but, see if it will format all the way through....let it go through the whole procedure...it CAN take some time trying to recover allocation units..( bad sectors, clusters, on disk ) but, I'd be looking for a new drive, sounds as if that one has seen it's last days....:eh?:

There is one alternative to try.....find out the manufacturer and model of the drive you have, and see if you can get a utility from the manufacterer to "low level' format it..( actually it just writes all 0's to the drive..) then try a repartition and format, it's a last ditch attempt to see if maybe it could be saved......and I have saved numerous drives like this...

BTW...did the laptop take any decent bumps or hits?....

There are some known trojans that can screw the boot sector and prevent even FDISK from working on them......only way to fix THAT is again..."low level format"....give it a shot....the worst that can happen is it won't fix it.....

If you have the model # of the drive, I might be able to search down something for it, considering toshiba used alot of outside manufacturers...( i have a toshiba laptop which NOTHING in it is made by toshiba....go figure...it's a pain in the a** getting service or parts for this thing...)..it may not be one of theirs....I may even have something on one of my many many cd's of crap....but i need to know what kind of drive it is first...

Your harddrive is a bit of a mess:

1) Do a low level format - see toshibas website, or the website of the Hard disk manufacturer.

2) Make partitions

3) Format partitions.

OK, I was just able to get onto the site since last night...( is it me or does the forums seem to be loading slow or not at all sometimes? ) I got the drive info, I will post back when i come across something....

:EDIT: well, toshiba offers no kind of downloadable diagnostic utilities, the link below is for information on your drive, I will continue to look and see if I can find a utility in which to do a low level format of the drive....until then, you may want to get in touch with toshiba and see what they can do for you...

Your drive info...

hey, glad to hear.....if it can complete an install and boots fine...be sure to load up an Anti-virus scanner with the most recent virus defenitions and do a complete scan......both with the AV software and scandisk.....unless you have other disk utilities...( like norton utilities "disk doctor" and such..)

I'll still post a "low level format" program when i find it...or better known now as a "Zero-fill utility" since no newer ide hd's can be low level formatted outside of the factory. Just in case you may need it....:D

:EDIT:...I have a file for you, it works with all ide drives to write zero's and map out bad sectors, I dl'ed it myself and am currently running it on another system to fix a drive that refuses to be partitioned...so far it's working....

to use it...DL it and run the file on your working system, you'll need a blank floppy in the drive, the program will create a utility disk from the floppy with the needed files, the link is below....:D

Zero-fill utility
