HD not being detected anymore...

So the other day one my HD failed on my NAS and I would like to get some data from it, if at all possible.

I've removed it from the NAS and installed on my PC for testing, it fs is set to ext4 I think, however, the HD is not being detected on boot/BIOS.

I've verified that it seems to be spinning as I can feel it vibrating when I touch the side of it.

I know the sata slot and cable are working as I am using it from my dvd-rom which was working and being detected.

Are there any options I could still retrieve the data from it? Even if its not a conventional way? (preferable one that I dont have to pay for, I don't mind opening it if I had to as in the worst case scenario I would just lose the HD and its data anyway)

Thanks in advance.

Open 'Device Manager' and see if it shows up. If it's present, hover your mouse over the info for it and right click, use options for managing it.

Was this drive a single drive or in a RAID configuration? RAID 0? RAID 1? Was it simply a USB external drive plugged into your router or was it in a dedicated NAS enclosure?

Does it show up in diskpart? Open the windows terminal or Powershell with admin privileges. Type diskpart and hit enter key. Then type list disk and hit Enter key. Does the drive show up?

Thanks for the replies.

No it was not present, it is also not present in the BIOS, I was trying to use ext2fsd to read it on windows 10.

It was a single drive in a dedicated NAS enclosure, DNS 327L, that have 2 bays with both HDs as single.

It doesn't show at all on windows, I also tried using a usb dock and plugging it directly to the board to no avail ;(

I even tried checking it with a Linux OS to see if it could be re-partitioned but it simple doesn't show.

Probably dead. If the stuff on there is important and you really need to recover it, you might consider replacing the circuit board from an identical drive. The link Alaric provided might be of help there. Did you not have a backup scheme in place? Sooner or later every storage drive will bite the dust. Data needs to be in two places so that if one of those places is inaccessible you can restore from the other one.

Three places is often recommended. One local and one offsite so that should disaster strike locally, all backups are not lost. If there is only one backup is employed, it needs to be offsite for this reason.

Yes, three including an offsite is certainly better. Offsite backup can be physical (eg., a USB external drive kept at the office or in the care) or cloud-based such as Google Drive/Microsoft One Drive/Carbonite. Could-based is very convenient and automatically syncs from the local computer.

I do have backup of what was important in it, however there were a few things I did not keep a backup of, such as songs, older projects no longer in use but that I still wanted to keep, and some utilities applications and files.

The songs I had most on my mobile except the latest ones which I send directly to the NAS first and then sync with my mobile, older projects I only keep on the NAS and the utilities app as well(these are things like cpuz, winrar, etc its not things I can't obtain again but I had a good collection set in there for all purposes), those aren't necessary of importance but if I could retrieve em I would like to try that's all.

For everything else I keep a cloud, local, github version of it.

If the drive is spinning up it is likely a controller failure. Check out these guys.

Thanks I will check that.

Prices seem pretty reasonable, I might try that, but need to get a torx key first to remove the board and see its model nr :p

So assuming there is no issue with the disk spinning swapping the board might work? Or what other issues I might find doing so? Out of curiosity... And thanks again for the help and replies!
