LOL I dunno just to hold a fan on it should work fine. A zip tie is basically the same thing.

I hear that. no sense on skimping on a waterblock or radiator but i think the fan mounts can slide a little bit.

Whatever you use, if its plastic, keep an eye on it. Zip ties for example, dry out over time and become brittle like corn chips. I suspect other plastic solutions will also.

You can get zip ties made for the rigors of outdoor use. They are UV resistant and can withstand many freeze thaw cycles and last for years. They are still prety cheap too. Just look on the package for UV resistant.

isn't it better to be using a shroud and mounting the fan to the shroud?? I though optimal cooling was with the fans about an inch away with the air focused??

if you have the fan right on the heatercore there is gona be a hot spot right under the center.

You bring up a good point. If you use a UV light inside your case to achive some sort of artistic gratification, it will deteriorate non-UV resistant ties even faster than drying out. Even black, UV resistant ties dry out though. We use lots of them at work and just recently learned not to open the bags and put them into trays until we have to. Ones that have layed in the trays for more than about 6 months tend to snap as you tighten them down. Ones that have been in service (out of the sunlight) grow brittle as stated in a year or so. Interestingly, ones outdoors last longer. I suspect getting rained or snowed on from time to time replenishes the moisture in them. Hard to say...
