Hi, I currently have a swiftech mcx478-V heatsink with a Vantec Tornado 92mm fan. I have it running at 6400rpm constant and I get idle temp of 48c and Load around 59C. It runs at these temps even when my cpu is slightly oc'd. I'm trying to OC around 4ghz but my temp just gets too hot for me. I've had this heatsink for over a year and have been pretty disappointed. I have very good airflow in my case (7 fans) so I know thats not the problem. There is also no cable clutter for it is all managed well. I'm also using Arctic Silver 5 heatsink compound.

My computer right now is extremely loud and everyone that comes within 50 feet of it complains about how loud it is. I'm not looking for silence but something very very quiet because I just can't take the noise anymore.

From my understanding the Prescott series CPU's run pretty hot. My goal is to get my CPU to run under 48c LOAD. Money is also not a limit. I was looking at the Thermalright SP-94 (which is kind of old) or the newer XP-90C. Not sure on what fan quite yet. Preferbly one below 40db I suppose. Thanks for any responses.

Setup:
Motherboard: Asus P4C800-E Deluxe (socket 478)
Heatsink: Swiftech mcx478-V w/92mm Vantec Torando fan 6400rpm
CPU: Intel p4 3.2 prescott
Memory: 1GB PC3500 Performance Series Dual-channel OCZ Optimized Kit
bios ver 1018.
Video Card: Sapphire ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 256mb
I don't feel like listing anything else.... :)

I was using a 3.2e and a hyper6 o/c d to 3.9@44C

Are you using the fan that comes with it? Also how many RPM's is your fan running at? And is your multiplier unlocked on that chip? Because mines locked at 14.

pyr0x, I would strongly recommend the Thermalright xp-90c. I have both the xp-120 and the xp-90c and I found that the xp-90c was far better at cooling prescotts.

Thats the stock multi as far as I know as theres no option to change it.
I used 2 coolermaster fans running @ 1800 scaling up to
2800 at 45C
is yours a 3.2e 1mb cache?

92mm Vantec Tornado at 6400 rpm? They run 4800 rpm stock, did you overvolt yours or is that a typo? 40 dB will be awfully quiet compared to the Tornado, especially if you overvolted it. So, if you're willing to continue to accept the noise, go with the XP-90C, and it might even be worth upgrading to the TFB0912UHE. The SP-94 is good, it was the best available when I bought it, but the XP-90C is much better now. For a quieter fan, you could get FFB0912HHE or EFB0912HHE, I wouldn't really recommend anything less powerful than that if you want to keep heat in check.

I have it running at 6400rpm constant
they run 4800 stock @ 12v, i have one.

And is your multiplier unlocked on that chip? Because mines locked at 14.
No 3.2e runs with a 14 multi. All intel Chips are locked, except engineering samples.
200x14= 2800
200x15= 3000
200x16= 3200

is yours a 3.2e 1mb cache?
all 478 prescotts are 1mb cache. the other 478 variant is the northwood, with 512K cache.

i recommend a thermaltake big typhoon, its going to be my cooler that i am going to buy for my 3.2e, should serve me well.

I'm almost positive I have a Vantec Tornado 92mm on it. I have not over volted mine either...oh you know what. I have the 80mm one I'm sorry. I was just looking at the specs and it runs at 5700rpm max but mines at 6400 somehow. so the current decibles is probably around 60dba...which I can't stand. I think I'd want one in the 30's with still sufficient cooling. Here's a screen shot of hardware monitor for proof: http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/5198/hardware1bx.jpg LOL. I'm almost positive I'm going to get the XP-90C as long as I can just have a quiet fan. All I need are quiet but effecient fans for OC'ing now. Thanks for all your responses

I'll put in a rec for the Scythe Ninja, just make sure it'll fit within your case. I've tinkered with xp120, xp90, and the Scythe generally out handles even with a near silent fan, of course depending on your case air dynamics. The XP120 does a nice job of additionally cooling power mosfets, tho.

Ok. I've decided to get the XP-90C. But I can't decide between 2 fans right now. My main concern is noise to be honest. But I'm used to constant 110dBa. I'll list the two specs that I care about below each fan. Tell me what you think and if you have had any experience with them please let me know. I want to know if you can even hear them with the sidepanel on. Or in fact even notice a difference between 30dBA/36dBA. Airflow is also a priority because I will be overclocking my 3.2 prescott do approximately 4ghz. Thanks
