Intel to Create new 8th Generation CPUs with AMD Radeon Graphics with HBM2 using EMIB

Today we have an announcement out of left field. Intel has formally revealed it has been working on a new series of processors that combine its high-performance x86 cores with AMD Radeon Graphics into the same processor package using Intel’s own EMIB multi-die technology. If that wasn’t enough, Intel also announced that it is bundling the design with the latest high-bandwidth memory, HBM2.

Now if you'll excuse me I'll have to go pick up my jaw from the floor.

The on and off rumours of this... has finally happened? Not quite putting AMD into Intel silicon, but within a package is maybe easier to swallow. Wonder when we'll see it in products? A common speculation is that is may be Apple driving this. They want more than Intel can give in GPU department without going to separate chips and the space that takes up.

So Intel takes a step back from making iGPU’s to focus exclusively on the CPU ? Seems to benefit both companies, what took them so long...

Deal wasn't about Intel getting access to AMD GPUs, it was about Global Foundry getting access to EMIB. Silicon implanted PCB for better interconnect between multiple on PCB Dies is a big deal for upcoming SOC manufactures. However, EMIB is mostly for Intel IPs so it will be interesting if AMD gets full leverage or just a better understanding on how to do the process.

There were rumours about Intel working on chips with AMD IGP for maybe 2-3 years. I was wondering when it will happen. The same as there were rumours about ARM based server chips on both sides and Atom 16+ core server chips. It was released this year after about 5 years since I heard it will happen.

I bet that they will focus on ultrabooks and other smaller computers. If they make what AMD is doing with integrated graphics then we can see or low power laptops/SFF desktops which can actually run newer games or another useless IGP which won't be any better than typical Intel IGP. I mean the way how AMD is scalling their APU, where everything but the highest version ( which is also expensive ) is as good for any games as Intel IGP.

AMD could already release Ryzen based APUs as what they released so far for AM4 boards is pathetic.
