Hello all. I am a memeber over at Xtremesystems.org. A member, Conumdrum suggested I get active here also, so here I am!

Little background, then some questions. Been building PC's since 1994. Been using computers since the Commodore 64... yes, I am old. I am very well versed in the hardware side, weakish, in the programming side.

I am not afraid to take a dremmel to case, to apply a vicious overclock, and I am not brand loyal to AMD/ATI, Intel nor Nvidia. I just love to tinker, build, rebuild and build again.

So, this new build, I was wondering if I could get a new perspective from a second community.

Build 1 (mine)
Intel 1155 i7 3770K, 16GB Corsair Vengence, XFX HD7970, Samsung 840 256 GB, Asrock Extreme 4, Corsair HX1000, Apogee Drive II, Swiftech MCR 320 XP, MCR 220 XP, MCR 320 Drive Rev. 2, Monsoon Bay Reservoir, Swiftech Komodo 7900.

Build 2 (wife) Intel 1155 i5 3570, 16 GB Corsair Vengence XFX 5970, Samsung 840 256 GB, Asrock Extreme 4 mATX, Corsair GS 850, Apogee Drive II, Swiftech MCR 220 (2), XSPC Single Bay Reservoir, EK water clock for 5970.

Okay, I think I have enough cooling with both systems. Do you all think I have enough rads? Fans will be yate loon mediums. Possible swapping the 5970 for a XFX 7850 for wife.

What cases will hold that with out as much cutting? Hopefully a company that makes a fullsize and a midsize of the case, so our cases will look similar (yes, like a cheesy his and hers set up).

I was thinking of the Obsidian 900D and Obsidian 350D. They are taking a long time to get here, and I want to build.

Thanks guys.

Build one, just need one pump. Two would be nice not needed.

Build 2, the res is too thin a pain to use. Get a small res like the Swiftech Micro res. Works good.

EDIT: BUILD 1: 120x5 is more than enough raddage with SLI. If you can fit two 120x3, go with that if you plan SLI for a quiet rig.

Distilled water and a Killcoil for each loop.

I was C64 when I was 21 years old, I'm old too. I sold them at a PC store back then. Had a 386 next....

Welcome to OCF.

I think the 900D is overkill for your setup unless you don't care to spend that much for that case and might be adding Xfire in the future. If you want to have a his and her set I would advice going with a NZXT cases.

This is an example and more than welcome to use it.

- His - You won't need more than 120.5 which this case fits exactly. Swiftech's 120.3 up top and a 120.5 on the bottom. You want to go with a dual pump setup for redundancy and overkill than grab a Maelstrom-35X2.

- Hers - Matches yours (Mid case version) and you can fit Swiftech's 120.2 up top with a Maelstrom-35x. (Single pump)

Grab the low fin swiftech QP Radiators with some Helix120 fans and some color tubing of course.

These cases are pretty new and have great features. Liquid cooling capabilities as well as air if you ever want to switch back. Great cable management and for the price of a 900D you can get both of these cases. Don't get me wrong if you're the grunter (insert Tim The Toolman's voice) in this project, drop the gauntlet on the 900D cause she really is a beauty but won't come close to anything comparable to whatever you get your wifes.

He doesn't need more than one pump unless redundancy is a problem. The Mobo temp sensor will shut it down if the pump dies or he has a massive leak. Leak issues don't happen with smart builds. If it's a home PC it would be nice to have, but one for a series loop is fine. In fact, how many rigs have been posted here about pump failure since you been here? Me too? Quality pumps......... VERY VERY few.

Just my way of thinking. One pump with a res is a LOT cheaper than the dual res setup. No need even for the bay res really, if he gets the 900 there is sooo much room for a res on top of the pump. But, a Monsoon bay res with water temp readout is a nice feature.

OP: You can buy the Monsoon res with no pump, one pump, or two pumps.

Like I said its up to him if he wants it for overkill or redundancy and if you're going to wait for a temp sensor to shut off a system during a leak, you're wrong. The wet components will go first before the system says "pls shut me down" because of overheating.

As for the reservoirs I think you got the Maelstrom mixed up with something old. Maelstrom is the one with the water temp readout and MCP housing and or pumps.

I do like the Maelstrom. With one 35x it's $170. The 35x alone is $86, add the 35x res, total is $114. The dual Maelstrom is a whopping $254. Just kinda expensive, that's all. Prices from Sidewinders. Hmm, Performance PCs doesn't carry Swiftech resses, odd.

Two pumps for pumping redundancy, not for leaks. That is another issue.

Temp sensor I mean is the CPU temp auto-shutdown. And that's more for pump failure, a leak can kill parts with only a few drops or a tablespoon. The PC won't shut down till the smoke comes out.

We are on the same page GTXJB, no worries.
