Hey all

Okay so our company has finally decided to put a T1 into our home office so my first questions is:

  • Can anyone recommend a good T1 router? - it will need to support about 17 computers - however if we keep our cable line it will only be supporting 3 computers,.. MUAHAHAHAH

2nd question -
  • How can i use a T1 connection and a cable connection and put different people on each connection and yet have each person still able to browse our network with out any problems?

For the above - would i simply keep the router for the cable internet as it is and assign X amount of IP's - then on each computer manually assign the gateway / dns to point to the cable modem?

Then for the T1 router do the same for the computers that will go through that?

thanks for the help.

Here's a question back. Why can you only put 3 computers on the cable connection? Here is my thought. With a router, you should be able to get a lot more than 3 on the cable. Unless your cable speed is just too slow.

We have 2 T1's at work. We use Cisco brand product for the T1's. I think it's a 2190 something or another. I'll see if I can get the model #. That then connects to a 3Com switch. That then connects to a series of more 3Com hubs/switches for a total of about 100 machines +/- 1 or 2.

If you put some on the T1 and others on the cable they could talk to each other. I just am not sure of what the best method of that would be. I still am not sure that you need the 2 connections for the amount of machines you have.

well - right now we have 17 computer's on the cable but it is crap cable. (max 60KB up and down)

When i said only 3 computers - i meant it on the T1 - basically i am going to hog the bandwidth for myself - our HTTP server and my boss.

The other computers in the office - only 4 other access the internet (other employees) and they dont need anything hi speed as 95% of their work is internal work and they once in a while need to use the net - (except the accountant)

So in saying that - what i want to do is basically put the other employee's onto the cable connection - BUT still have them be able to browse the same network that myself and my boss can - even though we will be connecting to the net via the T1 :)

We do actually need 2 connections in this office reasons

1. we run an HTTP server with a customer service web site for our employee's which are located all over north america.
2. daily uploads to us of information from our servers - files averaging 200-300MB in size
3. 17 people on a cable line - lol is like each person being on a 14k dial up connection :)
4. live remote access to numerous computers through out the day
5. a back up connection because the ISP's here are not that great :d

hehe, trustme, if you worked here for one day you would cry with the speed we get sometimes! :(

i will check out the cisco routers, thanks.
