I would like to config and buy a new overclockable computer system that will serve as my programming and O/S tester.

New technologies to explore include x64 Windows Server 2008 with Hyper-V* (RC 1), onboard ICH9R RAID, 8GB (virtual servers need a lot!), and the whole overclocking thingy (Q6600 are supposed to be very good for this). Hot graphics is NOT what this build is about--I want a very fast machine that will host numerous operating systems and development environments. I plan to start with a WinXP x86 first (just to get things going, good for diagnostic too), then go for Win2008 x64 as the virtual serving host.

I'm looking for advice from experienced overclockers. Experience with ICH9R RAID and 8GB RAM helpful.

The proposed rig is:
  1. Cooler Master Cosmos Case 1000 RC-1000 (full ATX tower) 1

1 Has lots of 120mm fans (quiet with large air flow) and soundproofing
2 2nd choice was ASUS P5K Deluxe, but too many DOA's reported by users
3 Has required SATA slots and dual NIC (1000/100/10), good O/C capabilities, solid reputation
4 P35 has been out there a while, hence has been "debugged", just as fast as X38 without extra heat (don't need cross-fire)
5 Respectable memory vendor, uses Micron chips that other top-flight memory companies use, and costs less
6 Meets my needs as a modern graphics card, don't need gaming
7 RAID-configured SATA drives, 5-yr warranty (4 for the RAID, 1 as standalone and spare)
8 Considered by many as the best PSU out there, 80-plus efficiency, got 513w recommendation from extreme.outervision.com
9 One of best coolers out there, want to stay away from water cooling rig, will fit DFI UT
10 Simple, yet reliable (LightScribe seems a fun thing too), want to stay away from "bottom of the barrel" quality drives
11 Uses IDE/ATA channel because of reported issues with sharing SATA RAID with CD/DVD-Rom drives elsewhere
12 All overclockers got to have one!

*Yeah, I know VMware is out there (and works great too), but I've got to get familiar with the new MS

Looks good
Although I prefer Seagate drives myself, there isnt much difference

Any reason to buy a new floppy drive?
You could reuse an old one to install those RAID drivers for XP, but after that, its kinda useless

Looks like you've done your research on this one :)

I'm up-ing the wattage per other forums members' recommendations to 750w with a CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX ATX12V / EPS12V. Other than that, I'll see how it goes!

Thanks for looking in on the Easter weekend.
