PLEASE HELP....I AM GOING MAD!!

You need to install the 32-bit libraries for the client to work (the core is 64-bit)

Type this at the console:
"sudo apt-get install ia32-libs"
Say yes to using more space, then let it install.
I suggest running fah5 using sudo also, to avoid any problems writing out files.

can someone give me a full detail "HOW-TO" of linux installation and folding?? I've never done linux before and have no idea where to start.... :confused:

Are you looking to do just regular linux folding or 64-bit/SMP folding? I mainly have only used linux Live CDs for folding, but I could probably give you some pointers.

well that got it working.....thanks mate!!!

starting mdrun 'SMP-msv-03'
5000000 steps, 10000.0 ps.

I'm running on Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper Drake and I did not have to install these libs... just FYI for anyone else. Also, I'm not running the client using sudo (as root) and haven't had any problems yet.

Ubuntu 6.06 is LTS (Long Term Support), so I believe that release is a bit more tested and stable than the newer 6.10 Edgy Eft.

Worked on this most of the day. I did have to use sudo on occasion as the commands as written in this wikki just would not work for Kubuntu 6.1.

http://fahwiki.net/index.php/Running_the_FAH_client_on_Linux

This did prove helpful to this Linux newby (me) in getting fah up and running on the laptop but as I said I had to alter a few things as it would just not work as written. I believe the instructions may apply to 6.06. The key for me getting started was to find the console, Konsole or whatever (other wise know to me as dos prompt) btw, cls does not work as in dos but clear does. dir /w does'nt work but dir does and a couple of others reminiscent of dos. Now, how do I create a bat file to execute so one does not have to enter the command line?

On another note, is there a 'task manager' type of function in linux in order to see what is running?

Also temp monitoring, fsb or multi adjusting software....the typical oc'ing software? Is it possible to get a64 tweaker to run under linux (really tightened up the ram timings and dropped 6 mins per frame on the 2414's).

I should note that Kubuntu 6.1 looks much more like windows at times even feeling a little like windows. Heck there is even a control panel? Tried 6.06 a few months back but was not impressed. 6.1 seems somewhat better and I just may learn this Linux thing yet. Started folding a 1496 last night on the laptop:clap: .

Question: Do we not have to defrag the drives? If so what software do we use?

ps aux will give you an output of your processes. If you want to see just the Folding stuff try ps aux | grep Fah, that takes the output of ps aux and "pipes" it to grep which filters only the lines containing "Fah". Read the man pages on each for more info but this will get you going.

And as Jimbob says... you can use top for a realtime view. ;)

This may be overkill for what you want to do... but you need a little tutorial on shell scripting. Much more powerful than ye 'ole Dos batch file. ;)

Mine looks like this...

Code:
#!/bin/sh
/([I]path to FAH[/I])/fah5 -forceasm -verbosity 9

Silver,
Which of your rigs are you running Kubuntu 6.10 on? I tried to install it on a DS3, but Kubuntu totally hated the chipset. :-/ When I get a chance I'll try to install kubuntu 6.10 on my other C2D box, a P5B deluxe/wi-fi.

Running it on a compaq laptop as am out of town most of the time for the next month or two and seemed a great time to grab some work (fah), load up linux and get to learning.

Laptop is a compaq sempron. Mobo unknown as it is identified as a hp?

When you say you are having trouble with it is it just not loading itself? This would seem very odd to me. As for all the getting fah to run, had some trouble there as the commands as written everywhere did not seem to exactly apply to kubuntu 6.1. Everytime I would try something it would come back with an error of different sorts in response to my entry. Not the least of which was my entry of "load the f$%^&** program. It had no sense of humor and gave me something to the effect of "don't understand 'the'". At any rate have not tried loading it on the c2d's (ds3).

Seeing as how I am not really into games and am into $ and the future of my folding, Linux seems to be a very good alternative for me and I suspect other folders here. Saw that remote connect function (yeah baby). Now if we can get the members here to be patient enough to spend the next year answering silly questions then I/we may just get there.

Question: Why does it seem that there is so much more offered for Ubuntu 6.1 than Kubuntu 6.1? Maybe just me but am none the less downloading Ubuntu 6.1 now. Is Kubuntu more of a load and go system for newbs and Ubuntu offers more or is that just me?

Ihhrstdr (sp) are your systems oc'd. Pretty silly question but there were some forums wherein the oc'ing showed instability more readily under linux. Think not but am throwing out what I can. If'n you want to go it together then let me know and we can both threaten our systems with a hammer. I have a low clocking 2.9ghz e6300 on ds3 that may actually like linux smp folding. Take Care All.

Harlam - Looks like a good tutorial. Read about half of it and bookmarked it. Will have to go back and give it a good going over. Thank you.

Present Problem - Gkrellm does not see cpu temp. Other than that looks good. Don't run any of my 10 (with eleven on the way - 1st 939 sli) without temp monitoring. Oc'd I find this invaluable. At any rate loaded lm_sensors but still 0 degrees. Any ideas? No problem running numerous temp programs under windows so am fairly certain it can be done under linux. Most likely my ineptitude.

No difference except for the Desktop to my knowledge. The core OS is the same.

Ubuntu = Gnome Desktop

Kubuntu = KDE Desktop

The kernal loads up in RAM, I get to pick location, keyboard options etc, then I get a message stating that there is NO CD type drive with which to read the media...??? Wierd, but I'm thinking that the IDE controller just isn't getting recognized on this p965 chipset. Don't really know what else to do...

Both my DS3 and P5B are OC'd to a modest 3.0ghz, respectively.

whats the difference between ubunto and kubuntu???
i am running the 6.10 64bit AMD version of ubunto......is that ok?

lee

I think just that ubuntu offers the gnome desktop and that kubuntu has KDE.

Being truly a novice I know not the difference. I do however know that there are many more apps for gnome and most of them give errors when applied to kde. Why, I again know not.

I was planning to try it on my DS3/Conroe, so it doesn't like DS3 or the P965 chipset huh??

giving it a shot shortly. Showered, started the fire out back (stumps), got kvm cables from garage. Download is done. Burning image.

Image burned (6.06LT amd64/em64t Ubuntu). Hooking up KVM's and cd drive. System is ds3 w/e6300. Ide 20gig (ide) and cd (ide).
