I'm building a 1 GHz AMD and I'm having two problems. First, the cpu temp sits at 48c idle (ambient is 24, chassis is 31) and goes to 52/53 at full load. I reseated the HSF several time and switch from the white paste to AS but it didn't help (actually went up 1, and yes I cleaned the chip) Second, looking at SETI, my Compaq PIII Deskpro at 650 does it in 14 hrs but the AMD takes 30 hrs. SiS Soft says that the AMD is fine and that it's faster than a PIII at 1 GHz.But 30 hours???
I have a AMD AXIA0109XPAW A1000AMT3C on a MSI K7T Turbo R. The fan is a Cool Master DP5-6H11. Help!

If your going to o/c grab a better HSF...

In terms of SETI use the DOS based version... My system knocks over units in ~6 hours..

you can try lapping the crappy heat sink you have now or buy a better one this is my major problem(HEAT) i have crapolla cooling which is limiting my O/C i am waiting for the millenium HSF which is due out soon. lapping will help a little at least.

I got down from 30plus hours to about 7 hours with the DOS...wow.... my cpu is only at 80% load, is there a way to make it to to 100? what's a good HSF. I lapped it and got 2 to 3 C lower. Thanks.

To lower your temperatures more, try lowering the Vcore of the chip. Thats what I did, and I got a significant reduction in idle and load temps. You might also want to try lapping your hs w/ some 400 or 600 grit wet paper. Just go at it till you get all of the mill marks out of it. that'll also give you a performance gain till you can get a better hs (like a GlobalWin FOP-38 or an Alpha PAL 6035). Remember to spread your AS out evenly over the die of the chip, and don't touch it w/ your fingers or anything. When you seat your hsf, remember to apply even pressure over the entire chip, or it can crack (as I found out. I got lucky though, it still runs stable at 1200 Mhz). I hope that this helps!

I have that Cool Master DP5-6H11 on top of my 800 Duron oced to 1050mhz but I replaced that sissy fan with a Sanyo denki, 80x80, 36.6 cfm. Also I have 2 80x80 Sanyo fans for the case, one sucks, one blows. The result is... full load prime95, CPU temp is ~39C, idle CPU temp is 31C.
