I was thinking of upgrading my system to a KT266a chipset and DDR, instead of what I have now, KT133a and PC133 Cas 2 memory. Would it be worth $200 to do this? Will the performance be noticable for gaming and in general?

Definately upgrade the motherboard and ram. Your Ti4600 and XP 1900+ are being strangled by the pc133 ram. A KT333 would probably be a better choice and it's not much more than the kt266a.

yes u really should upgrade pc133 ram is becoming obsolete and as serraph was saying yout ti4600 and 1900+ can flex to their maximum capabilities

an abit kx7-333 refurb at newegg is 59, but right now they arent in stock. that would leave you 141 bux for memory, so you could get some good pc2700 (512mb) and be getting 13k 3dmarks

kt266 sux period no point in upgrading... get either kt400 or wait for nforcer 2 (2 weekS) that way u can use up to pc 3500 instead of a mesly pc 2100

kt400 boards so far are SLOWER than kt333 boards...i say go with an epox 8k3a+ or 8k5a2/3+...my 8k3a+ is GREAT..its so fast and what not..great buy...abit's are good choices also..the kx7-333 i think is good, and the AT7 is a great board

get 512mb of corsair pc3200 cas 2...this stuff roxors your soxors

YES!!! Do the upgrade. You will notice a huge difference!

I agree with the 8K3A+ and the Corsair 3200 CAS2 memory. It's a great investment and is super fast! You'll also be able to overclock like mad should you choose to follow that path.

Just curious, how are the boards based on the kt400 chipset slower than those based on the kt333??
Did I miss something or what?
I was hoping by summer the KT400's would have all the kinks worked out and I was going to do some serious upgrading.

Upgrade.

KT266 boards are to be avoided, but KT266a is pretty good, although getting dated; mine keeps my XP1600 up near 2000mhz just fine though:D

KT333 and KT400: from what I have read so far, generally speaking the 333 boards are a better bet overall, and even more so if you are going to OC the pc- KT400 still has a few problems that need to be worked out I guess?

The only KT400 board that I have read really good things about is the new one from Epox, and no surprise there:D
But it may not be worth the extra cash if there is a big price difference.

I say check Newegg refurbs and see what is available for mobos:

IF they have Epox 8kha+(kt266a) for under $60 it is worth it, otherwise a KT333 board, which is probably more common at this point. You should have a decent bit of cash left for some good ram.

Speaking of refurbs, they had some Abit KX7-333s for $59 last week. Look for those. Best KT333 Chipset board, by far.

Get a VIA KT333 motherboard, like a Shuttle AK35GT2 for $70 and some decent PC2700 RAM, or wait and see if Nforce2 is any good.
