Hey so it's been a longgg time since i've posted on the forum or even kept up with pc hardware as I've been pretty content with my main rig/ media center. The other day my media center which has served me so well for a while finally went down. It was a q6600 stock with a evga ftw lga 775 motherboard. I actually jumped the gun later that day and decided to get a i5 3570k with a gigabyte z77 ud3h motherboard. I know a bit overkill for a media center but Since my 5870 seems to be unusable anymore, I figured using the onboard video with the i5 instead of buying a cheaper amd and a video card would be about the same give or take.

I'm so out of the loop on computer tech I didnt even realize that the Haswells had come out and now i'm kicking myself in the *** wondering if I should go that route. I know i shouldnt start off an upgrade a generation behind but it seems like the performance boost is THAT big. I already got in my new cpu yest and wlil be getting my motherboard, HSF, and new case tomorrw. I really want to have the machine up and running but should i honestly go through the trouble or returning the shipments and just tgetting the haswell and possibly like a z87-a which would come out to like 20-30 bucks total more.

the haswell would probably end up being a non k vs the 3570k. Sorry for the long post any help is much appreciated!

The performance jump isn't all that big. The 3570k will overclock better than the equivalent Haswell, and maintain lower temps at the same time.

thanks! the ONLY reason i'm having such a hard time deciding really is because since this is a media center the power savings of the haswell is interesting. Although i know at load it uses more but at idle which it probably will be at most of the time there is some savings. the video cards dont seem that much better on the Haswell and the hd4k should be able to handle 1080p mkv's probably right?

AMD has better integrated GPUs, I would have went that route.. but yeah...

Intel's iGPU will handle 1080 no problem.

yea i should have checked out the amd's I didnt realize their integrated was a bit better, but also I may end up getting a discrete later on down the road to have this replace my 980x gaming rig as it eats up so much juice. I actually ordered a 4670k with a gigabyte z87x ud3h since there was a combo discount on newegg which actually made it aroudn the same amount i spent on the ivy setup. Think i made a poor choice? I can still cancel either set so just wondering what ya guys think
