Hi Guys,

firstly system in question as follows

CPU - i7 4820k 3.7ghz
Mobo - That awful standard alienware x79 2011 socket thing
GPU - GTX 690
Ram - 16GB Corsair Vengeance
PSU - Corsair HX850i
Cooling - Watercooled CPU/GPU custom loop - 9x Fans total

So based on the build above, I was an alienware sucker once upon a time. I have since rebuilt the entire PC myself with the exception of Motherboard and CPU. Id like to say I know a fair bit about PC building now however, when it comes to overclocking this is utterly noobville for me. I have never had to and so never thought about it. The reason I am looking at it now is because I am finally looking at making the switch of the Mobo and processor for some more modern day tech such as DDR4 ram and all that jazz. Ive had my current build going for 4 years fault free just fyi.

I have just bought a GTX 1080ti 11GB GPU and all the waterblocks for upgrading and I have been reading some possible issues with bottlenecking the CPU with this card. Not specifically my CPU though but my question is, whilst I am upgrading and future proofing as it were, will putting abit of overclock on the CPU assist with wacking such a hefty card in? or will it really make not a great deal of difference?

I suppose not much point asking for tips and how to's on overclocking it without asking if its really worth it in the first place.

Any questions or advice welcome in regards to this

Cheers

1090p with a 1090ti and 144 hz is a good match. That said, at that resolution, you will want all the CPU speed you can get. I'd wait until the new 9 series comes out soon and jump on that, maybe 9700k, along with a z390 mobo and some ddr4 and build off that. :)
