First off I'm running....

xp1600+ (133x10.5)
ak32l shuttle MB
512mb pc2100 ram
40gig seagate 7200 rpm HD
geforce 2 mx 400 (240/210)
and your other basic equipment (cd-rom, floppy, burner, etc..)

when I have my case closed, and 3dmark2k1 runs long enough to max out temps (usually let it run for bout 30 mins) CPU temp will hit 62c..... I about crapped my pants when I saw this.... I have been running about 57c under load then I decided to check it couple of weeks ago, and it's that high.... I made sure that isn't any dust that could generate more heat. I have 3 80mm (generic antec) case fans blowing air across the CPU (one to the side, to the right of where you plug in keyboard, mouse, etc... on the back of case) blowing cool air into the case. then one on the top blowing air out, and one in my cd-rom bays blowing air out. Right now I have a osolating (Sp?) blowing air into it with the panel off.... I have just a generic case, nothign special. I have a dragon orb cooling the CPU (yes I know it sucks bung....) I need somethin better, but I'm just flat broke..... I can prolly rig up some ducting from the osolating fan to the case if I have to.... I need to know if there is anything cheap that I can do to cool this down alot..... I have a Tt heatsink right here, but no fan to it.... and no AS3, or any thermal compound.

Thanks for any help.

What kind of heatsink do you have?? You have no thermal paste at all between heatsink and computer chip? that is also defintly a problem.. make sure everything is set right.

That's definatly a problem.. You have to have some kind of medium between the HS and the processor. Also, make sure you fan is blowing down on the HS.

You might also want to check out the Cooling section for more advice.

First off, if I'm understanding you correctly, you're blowing air through your case backwards. I'll explain:

to the right of where you plug in keyboard, mouse, etc... on the back of case) blowing cool air into the case
nope...it's not blowing cool air into the case. If it is, in fact, blowing into the case, it's blowing HOT air back into your case.

The power supply gets very warm...that's why it's fan blows out of the case---to avoid blowing that heat back in. If the case fan is just below the PSU, and it's sucking air into the case, it's HOT exhaust air that the PSU is blowing out!

then one on the top blowing air out
I assume you mean a top blowhole. As in, a fan blowing out of the case, mounted in the very roof of your case.

If you're gonna have a fan here, then yes, it should blow out.

and one in my cd-rom bays blowing air out
not sure exactly what you mean here...but either way, you've got it wrong. :)

I assume you mean an 80mm case fan in the bottom front of your case, UNDER the drive bays. This fan should blow INTO the case. Because of it's location (hot air RISES, remember), it's the most likely place around your case that cool air is gonna be. So it should blow INTO the case.

OR...maybe you mean one of those drive bay coolers, with the 40mm fans? Those things are terrible. They blow very little air, and they make a lot of noise. Not worth having, IMO.

OK...now that we've fixed your case airflow...
Right now I have a osolating (Sp?) blowing air into it with the panel off
Does this help your temps much? It should help some, as your case airflow was all screwed up.

But I suspect it doesn't help much, as we've got another problem, it seems...
I have a Tt heatsink right here, but no fan to it.... and no AS3, or any thermal compound.
ummm...if I'm reading this right...you've got a thermaltake dragon orb heatsink on your processor, with NO FAN and NO THERMAL GREASE?

TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER RIGHT NOW BEFORE IT OVERHEATS!

Heatsinks, no matter how good or bad they are, do not perfectly mate to the processor. There MUST be some sort of thermal interface material between the processor and the heatsink in order for the heatsink to be able to effectively move heat from the processor. Get yourself a tube of thermal grease (cheap...$3 or so at a local store) or AT LEAST one of those pink thermal pads (even cheaper...but definately not as good as grease)

Also, you have to have a fan on the heatsink in order for it to cool the processor. The heatsink will absorb SOME heat on it's own...but there's gotta be a fan on the heatsink in order for it to be able to move that heat to the air, and out of your case.

Good luck, I hope we've helped you!
