Hey all,
I have a Hitachi gd5000 DVD/cd rom and I can no longer play DVD's? The cd rom works fine but when I put a DVD in I get this message:
"windows media error, cannot playback the file, this format is not suported?"

When Use the prog "power DVD" I get this error:

"WNASPI32.DLL is required to run PowerDVD.
Please refer to the "ASPI issue" section in the Readme file for a solution to this problem."

Any ideas?

nope, not software! I have PowerDVD, PC Friendly and of course winXP media player..non recognize my DVD.
Now I have had it over a year w/ out any probs. it only stopped worked after I did a re-install of WINXP pro...other than that there has been no changes to the cables or dvd rom itself..I did install a duct and that runs below it..but I dont see how that could interfere w/ it. All the cables are tight and I can think of no other reason why it is not reading my DVD's.....cd rom works fine.

I may get in trouble for sugesting this but....

go to http://www.digital-digest.com/ and download a DVD ripping tool. Then see if you can rip .vob file to your hard drive. If you can then your DVD rom is reading your DVDs and you have a software problem.

PS
Make sure you delete the .vob files from your HDD when done.

Well Staz, my hat goes off to you:D

i downloaded the prog you suggested and installed it..it asked for a reboot in order to run..I did not reboot as I was going to try it later. However I was listening to some MP3's via Windows Media and was switching skins when I saw that Windows Media was now recognizing my DVD?!?!?!? I dont know whether the DVD prog I downloaded did anything because there has been no changes to my system since I reported my DVD prog...whatever the reason it works now!
Anyway, it works, I dont Know why, but it works again:burn:
