I have a windtunnel case with 2 92mm fans on the side.
My heatsink is a ax-7 with a 80mm currently on top.
The 92mm side fan is not directly over the cpu but it mostly is( it hits the cpu and the ram, while the other hits directly over the video card.)
Between the the 80mm on the ax-7 heatsink and the interior of the 92mm on the side I currently have approx 2 1/2 to 3 inches of air space.
I was thinking of purchasing the 80 to 120 mm adapter but this would leave only approx 2 inches between the case fan and the cpu fan.
It would change it from 53 to 86 cfm though at 34 db sound.
Is that to close to have such powerful fans together?
I am sure that it would suck everybit of the air coming in and then some from the 92 mm partially over it.
What do you think?

fan conflict

I agree that the 92 would probably cause some conflict(it would probably not be a very useful fan). without actually seeing what you have, its hard to tell. It sounds like you could just get rid of that fan altogether--maybe duct your HSF to the hole and use it for an additional exhaust fan over your cpu?---you didn't mention having any exhaust fans at all--psu doesn't really count.

case setup is one 80mm in front, 2 92mm on the sides.
Exhuast is 1 80mm on top, 1 80mm on back, plus the 92mm intake 80mm exhaust PSU( enermax).
Internal fans are the stock on the geforce 4, north fan, 40mm ram cooler fan, and 2 80mm fans set on low to 25cfm each over the hardrive on the enemerax digital temp bay.

Will try to get a pic later but basically the 92mm on the side crosses the cpu and fan like this:

-----------
: --:--------
: HSF : : :
: : :92mm:
--------:-- :
------------

Currently 2 5/8 inches between the interior of the 92mm and the outer edge of the 80mm hsf.
The adapter is 25mm, so afterwords looking at around 2 inches clearance.

Gah it formated out the spaces , the 92mm should show down and right more to cross over about 40% of the hsu
