Well actually a lot of these boxes can be had for 10.00-50.00 each on ebay. You make some compromises when budget shopping for lab equipment but it does what you need it to do for certification.
These aren't toys? I covet a 2800 for my lab but I haven't been willing to part with the cash yet. I may break down and buy one soon.
Well if you really want to get down to it Gig E is more of an unneeded trend than just about anything else out there as far as home networks go. 100 Mbps will serve even the most robust home network. The only reason I went Gig E over my old 2900 was to cut down on power consumption and noise in the basement. The new Linksys switch also supports QoS and prioritizes traffic on the fly so that was a plus. I actually think the back plane on the Linksys is slower than the old 2900. When running three or four HD streams I get a little freezing that I didn't see when I had the 2900 in the network. I may have to actually go to a slightly more robust switch than the Linksys.
