Home network project

Yeah I looked and looked at racks but since this is my game room and soon to be home theater room I wanted something that would look good. My network lab is in a rolling 19" rack:

i have a few MCS3810's and a 1760, that is about it right now :/ i'm too poor for anything more haha! allthough, i did put a bid in for a 4506 with a supervisor and redundant power supplies

Well actually a lot of these boxes can be had for 10.00-50.00 each on ebay. You make some compromises when budget shopping for lab equipment but it does what you need it to do for certification.

i'm stoked about the 2811 i'm getting soon from a project upgrade, i already have my adsl HWIC ready to slap in

These aren't toys? I covet a 2800 for my lab but I haven't been willing to part with the cash yet. I may break down and buy one soon.

to each their own i guess? i mean, if i had too, i would use them for lab work as i only need 10/100 poe for voice.

the raw switching power a 4500 + has is amazing i wouldn't mind getting more blades for our 4507 here at work.

Well if you really want to get down to it Gig E is more of an unneeded trend than just about anything else out there as far as home networks go. 100 Mbps will serve even the most robust home network. The only reason I went Gig E over my old 2900 was to cut down on power consumption and noise in the basement. The new Linksys switch also supports QoS and prioritizes traffic on the fly so that was a plus. I actually think the back plane on the Linksys is slower than the old 2900. When running three or four HD streams I get a little freezing that I didn't see when I had the 2900 in the network. I may have to actually go to a slightly more robust switch than the Linksys.

everyone loves to see the gig connection, its just human nature to want the bigger speed vs fast Ethernet with a blazing back plane.

Hey everyone.

First of all, congrats! Really a nice job you did!

I'm new to the forum and also starting on AV and gamming stuff. I'm not in US, so I'm not familiar to some of the equipments too. I have some questions, and some of them may be very silly.

Here they go:

1. How is TV signal distributed? I guess it's over coax and there should be a decoder at the end, close to the TV set. Is that right?

2. What is the equipment in the bottom shelf, the one with many blue symbols?

3. What kind of connections you must have arriving to the home theater room? Ethernet, TV?
