Hey guys. I have a dell latitude D505 laptop that i use for work. I have a dock for it and this acts as my desktop PC most of the time, but every now and then and take it with me on trips and weekends. It is pretty old, but it runs way above what i would expect from the hardware, and i am very happy with it, plus i have all the accesories that i like for it, so i am looking to upgrade without having to change the laptop. I am proficient with PCs and have built my own systems for years, but i have never opened a laptop, nor do i know exactly what can be upgraded in it. I am looking for advice from the pros on how to get more out of this lappy.
These are the specs:

CPU: Mobile Intel Pentium M 745, 1800 MHz (18 x 100)
Mobo: Dell Latitude D505
Chipset: Intel Montara-GM+ i855GME
RAM: 1x256mb, 1x512mb, all PC2700
HDD: Hitachi Travelstar 60gb Ultra-ATA 100
Onboard video: Intel(R) 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller (64 MB)
Wifi: Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG
NIC: Intel 82801DB ICH4 - PRO/100 VE
It has bluetooth, a DVD RW

What is upgradable in this setup?

The only things you could really upgrade is the RAm and the hard drive. You can probably upgrade UP to 2 GBs of ram, but check online to make sure. Im pretty sure they have some nice 100+ GB hard drives out now for laptops. Everythig else I dont see you doing much with.. you might be able to get a better wireless card if that one isnt serving you well enough.. if you have a expansion slot that isnt in use.

I think that chipset only lets you use 400MHz chips, you might need to read up on that.

855 is limited to 400Mhz Pentium M's. Im looking for one to upgrade mine as we speak. Try to find a 755 or a 765.

Is that M a Dothan (sp?) if so you may be able to pinmod it to 2.13GHz pretty easy IIRC!

Other than that, just RAM and hard drive, but RAM will make the most impact.

In my Thinkpad R50 with almost same specs I installed a 7200 RPM 100 Gig Drive. I cant believe the difference it makes in the whole computer. Boots faster, loads everything in windows faster. Its by far the best upgrade you can do to a notebook I think.
