Well I built my first box (ad11, axia 1 gig, 256mb DDR,etc.) I partioned and formatted the HD. When I boot up I get the C prompt. How or what do I do to install win98? How do I get the computer to read the cdrom drive with the win 98 cd? Thanks,
Jumper

This is a very simple process you just need to know a few comands. First thing is partitoning, which youve already got done, now you just have to install win98. You will need thw win98cd, and the floppy. Put them both in and boot up your comp...

It will bring up a prompt giving you 3 choices.

1) Start with cd-rom support
2) Start witout cd-rom support
3) view the help file

You want to start with the cd-rom suport.

It should then restart and once it finishes loading you will probably come up with the A prompt. now just type setup. It will do a routine check and then you will start installing windows. Its all really self explanatory from there, windows walks you threw the rest. BTW if typing setup doesnt work try setup.exe, I think this various with some dos versions... Also a little note, when your working in dos like that w/o an operating system, your usual cd-rom drive (probably D:), gets pushed back a letter, becuase dos creates a drive for your ram. So the ramdrive is now D:, and the cd-rom is E:. This might vary with dos versions to I bet, but its like that on all 4 of my comps. Good luck!! BTW if you need the windows floppy becuase u lost yours or something I can upload u all the files and u just need to put them on a regular floppy and ur all set...

I've never had a floppy with Win98. This is the first time I've ever heard of it.
I just set the bios to 1st BOOT DEVICE CD ROM
instead of floppy or ide0.
Chuck the Win98 cd rom in and reboot. Should auto run the set up progam for you.
Good luck.
BTW dont forget to set your bios back to 1st boot device floppy or ide0 etc. After install

i think after u set the bios for cdrom boot u should run the start computer with cd rom support b/c the auto setup never worked for me some reason
after u run the command start coptuer with cd rom support then go into the cd rom drive and type "setup"(without quote marks) and it will start setup program

You might also need try this if your running a bootable CD:

Windows will create a "virtual" A drive. As a result, your cd drive, usually D: may now be E: Don't as me why..I'm not sure, but bootable CD's always seem to move the cd rom letter when creating a virtual drive.

After you have formatted and followed above directions:

-Start Computer w/ CD Rom Support
-Once all is done, you will be at the A: prompt:
-Find out where your windows cd is:
-Type E:, enter or D:, enter
-Type dir (you should see Win98, Setup, Fdisk, etc)
-Once you find out which drive letter is the windows CD:
-From the drive letter (e: or d:), Type:
1)cd win98 or CD win98_se (if you have win98se)
2)cd setup
3)setup

...and you should be on your way...good luck
