How well do Opteron 144 (S939) E4 stepping CPU's overclock

Hey guys, I'm wondering how well the E4 stepping Opteron 144 (1.8GHz) overclocks. I'm currently running a Venice core Athlon 64 3200+ and am considering eBaying it and going to the Operon 144.

What do you reckon guys, is it worth it?

it overclocks well, but if your venice overclocks well i would probably just stick with that. IMO the extra 512k of cache is not really noticable.

hell, a sempron 64 2800+ feels just as fast as my opteron...but then again i don't have a good enough video card to play any decent games so its all office 2k3 and the internet for me :santa:

That seems a strange mix of quality performance components + budget stuff to me..... When I upgraded ro my currenty 9800Pro when I had my OC'd 2500+ Athlon XP, the video card upgrade made my system feel like a whole new computer....... :)

It'd be worthwhile going to a 6600GT, or maybe the top of the range S3 card. They both have similar performance (which is great for the price).

yeah, i'm waiting for the new 7200 and 7600 cards to come out in february (supposedly that's when they come out) before i buy a new video card. a ram upgrade will come that time too...i've spent too much $$$ recently on computer stuff as it is heh.

Mine is doing 2400 on air (Zalman 7000) with stock voltage and it only hits 35* while priming. I like this chip, I earned it after my 4000+ Clawhammer.

My current Athlon 64 3200+ (Venice) beats that. Perhaps it's not worthwhile changing CPU's/

I'm researching opties too, cause I'm going AMD soon. From what I gather on the 144's, they only have a 9x multiplier. So, the speed is 200x9 = 1.8GHz. Basically you need a really good mobo to OC the crap out of those. If you go 250x9, that only gets you 2.25GHz, not a huge increase in raw GHz. You're going to need a mobo that will do 334 on the FSB (is that the HTT??? amd noob here...) to get to 3GHz with a 144. The 146 and 148 are more popular it seems because of the multiplier, if I'm interpreting what I'm reading correctly.

Hope this helps, AMD soon for me, if the cards fall right.

Hmmm, I think I'll stick with my current A64. There doesn't appear to be any advantage in upgrading.....
