Okay, I finally did it. I upgraded mostly everything on my system. for those of you experienced folks, I was wondering how much of a difference I am going to notice once I get everything installed.

I had:

ASUS A7V Motherboard
AMD Athlon 900 mhz t-bird
512 MB pc133 ram
GeForce 3 ti200 64mb Video

I now will have:

Epox 8RDA+ Motherboard
AMD Atlon XP 1800+
256 MB Corsair DDR pc3200 ram (or whatever you call it)
ATI Radeon 9500 Pro 128 MB Video

Obviously I have taken a step up. Was just wondering how much. Your thoughts?

That's quite a large step, though if it was me i would keep using the Geforce. Never really liked ATI cards.

Youre prolly noticing a big difference in speed and performance.

hmm id take that old system over the futuremark/madonion and run pcmark2002.then when the new one is built and oced to its max bench it,also do it stock to compare.

im thinking in benchmarks it will double in perfomance.especially u push 2ghz and then 200fsbC2.thats a killer setup man.would even make me proud :D

will you see the differance? in games id say yes.not humongous differanance but a big one.everything else will seem just snappier.what ever that means.

Under what rock have you been hiding? :) The ATI cards simply rocks.. the 9500 pro will outperform any geforce card, plus it has dx9 support, and excellent 2d quality..

stand corrected the market currently still shows nvidia beating ATI by a great deal. But on a more personal note its a preference as i have did a a comparision with someone that had the 9700 pro and my little GF3 ti200 beat his card and both rigs at stock. So in conclusion its not just the card its the memory and the cpu that making things good.

You should stand corrected spydermatrix, Comparing your ti200 to another system w/9700 is not the same unless your using same MB chipset, Same CPU and o/c and same ram. Testing the 9700 in your machine beside your Ti200 would be more valid. Which do you think would perform better just in your machine? Your comparason is totally invalid.

The TI200 is DX8 capable, the 9500Pro is DX9 capable, beside the fact that most benchmarks I've seen place the 9500Pro ahead of the Ti200. Which do you think will scale better with CPU speed. He's going to an 1800+. I'll be happy to take your money if you'd like to make a little wager... :) The ATI is a better card than his old Ti200, hands down.

i also dont like ati. but im not saying the nvidia i have will beat the ati's benchmarks. ive had ati in the past and had nothing but problems with drivers. i got real tired of the b.s.o.d. while running windows xp. changed to nvidia and kissed the b.s.o.d. goodbye. this is just from personal experience and is only my opinion. im not trying to flame anyone. so dont take it wrong

ATi has had their share of problems. I have never used an ATi card, so I cannot really submit anything to this conversation, except....

How the HELL did a GF3 Ti200 EVER beat a 9700?!?!? I mean, come on. That's just rediculous. I am desperate to know the testing conditions for each card.....the 9700 on a 486, and the GF3 on an overclocked P4 3.06 with rambus??

It may be possible at really low resolutions... that's about it. I do get tired of people talking about crappy ATI drivers... I still haven't had a single problem... on my 7th ATI card now... just lovin it.

Guess what: Both companies have had crappy drivers. Yes, ATI is more notorious for it, but so friggin what? Get over it, people. The card is better. When the NV30 comes out, it will be better. That's the way of things. The interesting thing will be to see if ATI goes the way of AMD (content to take the lead for a bit, but finish second most of the time), or if they go the way of nVidia by dominating the market for a few years. One prodocut a dynasty does not make ... just ask 3Dfx ...

For what it's worth, on topic of the orignal thread, I'd say it depends on what is done with the computer. For some things, I'd wager it won't seem that much faster. Particularly if you are keeping the same hard drive. It won't boot up that much faster, it won't compress and uncompress files any faster, and it won't surf the web noticeably faster. But ... take it around the block in Unreal Tourney, and it'll be night and day.

its a fact that ati has lousy drivers. i hear it all the time from ati owners. maybe some people just get lucky. i was just not one of the lucky ones..

OH, and I just ordered my upgrade parts this week, too. For one of my older home computers, I'm going from:

IWill (I-won't) KK266-R
Athlon 1.2, 200MHz FSB (non-OC'd)
512MB of PC133
Radeon 64 DDR VIVO

(how is that for a list of CRAP parts ... except the proc)

TO:
EPoX 8RDA+
Athlon 2400+
512MB of Corsair DDR 433
PowerColor Radeon 9700 Pro (took a risk ... but it saves like $80)
White Water Rapids waterblock

I have the rest of my watercooling stuff ready, and a friend of mine is going to help me mod the case so the heater core and some shrouding all mount nicely in the top. It's a huge tower case, and I can use the first 3 or 4 drive bays for airflow. I've been itching to finish it all up for months, but never had the cash until this week.

Looking VERY forward to it ...

I'm not so sure it's a fact ... Once upon a time, it was 100% true. However, it's not that much of an issue, today. The problem is that it still is an issue in enough cases that people still blame them by reflex. I've used dozens of videocards, and I've never had more trouble than I had with a GeForce3 MX once upon a time ... so it isn't like nVidia is spotless, either. It depends on the rest of the rig and the software you are trying to run.

Maybe the title of this forum should be changed to 9700 Pro V. GF3ti200??

No seriously. Your new rig is gonna be much better than the previous.

Let us know how you like it. Welcome to the forum. :)

lets not be silly, you can't even begin to put that gforce in class with a 9700 pro

that rig looks sweet man, wanna trade off???
lol. you're gonna love it, that's a nice upgrade, and nice hardware choices. good job bro!

sorry sorry the 9700 was also put in mine and did not perform as well as my GF 4 and the rig used was the one in my sig and both times the rig was at stock speeds no o/c and still GF still got that little 9700 oh and the GF 4 has no problems with dx 9. lol and there is an old saying "its not the size that counts, its how you use it" well heres a new one, "Its not the brand name, Its how well you can O/C it".

i agree with you Paazabel new drive would improve overall system performance

I see nVidia owners all the time too who have problems with their card/drivers...whats ur point? DO u currently have an ATi product? No, so then u havent used their recent drivers...so shhh about drivers unless u have personal experiance. My 9500 Pro has run 100% flawlessly since day 1, as well as the great majority of ATi cards have.

Hey Evnas

Two questions for you. First of all, which version of Direct X are you running.

The reason I ask, is because when I installed Direct x 9 and the 3.0 drivers I got a major slowdown. (On my current computer). I had to resort back to the 2.5 drivers, and then no problem.

Also, are you overclocking your 9500 pro? If so, how are you doing it, and how do you make sure it doesn't fry.

Appreciate your thoughts.
