i have heard that "too much"
ram slows down you computer
this sounds to me to be stupid but is there any truth to it?

and would it hurt for mr to go up to 2 gig i mostly play games like battlefield, far cry and raven shield

I know that larger sticks of Ram will have slower timmings than their smaller counter parts. Maybe this is what you are refering too?

Eg: 1gb stick might have 4-4-4-8 timmings while a 256meg stick could have 2-3-2-6 timmings.

Not sure if this would make the machine slower or not, at least in real life applications. I know you can run out of ram when doing certain things like rendering 3D scenes. I've never heard of having too much though.

what i mean is if i use sticks of 512(like i have now)
to go up to say 2 gig is this better or just overkill?

1 Gig kit is enough now but later on 2 gigs will become a stardard. 2Gig kit would be awesome for things like SETI, Fold At Home, Photo shop, Editing etc.

The 2 Gig kit 3200EB link I posted above is expensive now but if you can afford it go for it.

For the price of good 512 X 4 you might as well get 1024 X 2 3200EB! (Dual chanel)

There is a reasoon why 2 gig kits exist especially the 3200EB 1024X2 for those that also want performance.

I hear the games comming out soon will take advantage of a 1Gig kit. It's a nice feeling having more than enough so it won't breakdown "Not enough memory" alert.

There was an article that I read at LostCircuits (which happens to be the site which was headed by the guy that went over to OCZ; I can't remember his name, but flapper know it) which did a rebuttal to an article at another site/magazine that stated that in certain cases, 2 gigs of ram hurt performance. The LostCircuits rebuttal did a good job of explaining the flaws in the first article and went on to show the advantages of more ram. If you are interested, you should be able to find it at that site without too much effort, just look in the Memory section. It is probably summed up best by saying that more ram won't hurt (unless you are trying for an O/C record), but it will only shine in those applications that require large amounts, such as video related apps. Although I am not a gamer at all, I hear that future games will require more ram.

Most people with AMD boards only have 3 slots, you on the other hand have 4 on your Gigabyte board, therefore, you could just go half way and get another 2 x 256 of PC3500 and at 1 1/2 gigs, you should have no problems playing current and future games.
