I recently came across a great deal for a custom built rig that my cousin had some trouble getting to work, but figured I could do a bit better, so I bought the whole assembly for two hundred dollars. I have gotten all of the components to run great at their basic settings with a slight overclock on the processor, but my knowledge of optimization drops off there. I have access to the following components for the build:
Motherboard
CPU Type QuadCore AMD Phenom X4 Black Edition 9850, 2900 MHz (14.5 x 200)
Motherboard Name ASRock A780GXE/128M (3 PCI, 1 PCI-E x1, 2 PCI-E x16, 4 DDR2 DIMM, Audio, Video, Gigabit LAN, IEEE-1394)
Motherboard Chipset AMD 780G, AMD K10
System Memory 8192 MB (DDR2-800 DDR2 SDRAM)
4x OCZ Reaper HPC OCZ2RPR10662G 2 GB DDR2-800 DDR2 SDRAM (5-5-5-15 @ 400 MHz) (4-5-5-13 @ 333 MHz) (3-4-4-10 @ 266 MHz)
Display
Video Adapter ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series (1024 MB)
Video Adapter ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series (1024 MB)
3D Accelerator ATI Radeon HD 4890 (RV790)
Monitor Generic PnP Monitor [NoDB]
Multimedia
Audio Adapter ATI Radeon HDMI @ ATI RV770/790 - High Definition Audio Controller
Audio Adapter Realtek ALC888/1200 @ ATI SB700 - High Definition Audio Controller
Storage
Disk Drive ST3250310AS ATA Device (250 GB, 7200 RPM, SATA-II)
Optical Drive TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S223F ATA Device (DVD+R9:16x, DVD-R9:12x, DVD+RW:22x/8x, DVD-RW:22x/6x, DVD-RAM:12x, DVD-ROM:16x, CD:48x/32x/48x DVD+RW/DVD-RW/DVD-RAM)
Network
Network Adapter Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter (192.168.1.100)
Network Adapter Realtek RTL8168C(P)/8111C(P) Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.20)
DMI Motherboard Manufacturer ASRock
DMI Motherboard Product A780GXE/128M
DMI Chassis Asset Tag To Be Filled By O.E.M.
DMI Chassis Type Desktop Case
DMI Total / Free Memory Sockets 4 / 0
I'll thin that out to:
Motherboard: AsRock A780GXE/128M
Processor: AMD Phenom x4 9850BE
RAM: OCZ Reaper HPC OCZ2RPR10662G DDR2 1066 Dual Channel
HDD: Seagate 250gb 7200rpm SATA II
Video Card: XFX Radeon 4890 1gb (installed) HIS Radeon 4870 512mb (want to install)
PSU: Raidmax 630ss 630 watt (I know its not enough for the crossfire)
I was wondering what I could do to maximize performance of the ram, if I should get a motherboard with support for pcie 2.0 x16 in crossfire, or if the gains in performance are not worth the cost, and If my method of processor overclock can be improved. Any input is appreciated.
