I am going to install Win. Xp on a machine that has Win. Me right now.... I would have to format the disk, blah blah blah... and start from scratch.

My question is, how do I save my Outlook contacts and current mails so that I can then transfer them to Outlook again once I have Win. Xp installed? Is there a folder that contains them, and that the ¨new¨ outlook would recognize?

If you run your winXP disk first don't install instead picl the "other" option and that'll have a file and settings transfer option. Just follow the instructions and "should" make it practicaly painless.

In XP it is the Documents and settings folder under your username... should be similar for ME. Mine is: "C:\Documents and Settings\nikhsub1\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook"

search for your .pst file on the computer. It should be in the location that nikhsub1 mentioned.

Otherwise, open Outlook, right click on your Personal Folders, select Properties, then go to Advanced and make note of the location under Filename. Copy that to removable media and then you can restore it onto your XP installation.

Note that if you do copy it to a CD, you'll need to restore it back onto the hard drive and remove the "read only" properties on the .pst file before opening it again.

I’m not sure if ME supports it, but you might want to try the Windows Migration Wizard. Advance settings will allow you to transfer mail, as well as outlook (and other office apps) settings. It will also transfer anything in your profile such as My Documents.
