I have a second power supply that I want to set up to run my fans. How do I go about doing this? I've plugged it into the wall but I get nothing. I am 110% positive it works because I just pulled it from my tower.

listen just wow ok for a power supply to work there has to be a load attached to it threw the p20 cable. if you want to use the 2nd power supply just for the fans your best bet is to just go and but some new molex copnnector fans at compusa or radioshack. some motherboard support a 2nd power supply a company gigabyte sells a addon for there top of the line motherboards. but they are extremly expensive and worthless in my opinion

so you need to have a load conected to the p20 cable on your powersupply to be abkle to ue it this is for safty resons. they have power supply load testers that they sell in cybers guys and radio shack that will make a load on the circuit.

THIS DOES NOT APPLY WITH ATX POWER SUPPLIES. They will run FINE without a load applied. It used to be that AT PSUs would self destruct without a load.

To turn the PSU on short the green wire to a black wire.

DoubleJ8,
Here ya go

That is one way, the way that I did it was this:

My dual psu setup

Ok, here is what I did, Using an AT styly power supply, I dremmeled
a hole in the motherboard side of the case.

Connected all the case fans, storage hd's and optical drives to a series
of Y power splitter adapters, and passed the plugin leads to the outside
of the case, then connected those leads to the external psu.

Since the AT psu has its own switch, I dont have to worry about wiring the two
powersupplys together, and really did not want them that way anyway.

You with me so far?

When I get ready to turn on the system, I power up the external psu first,
then power up the system.

When shutting down, I turn off the system, wait a few mins before turning off
the external psu, which allows the fans to continue to remove any residual heat.

A few different methods of hooking up 2 PSUs. Personally, I like the Burning Issues method, because it doesn't involve cutting up the PSU wires. BTW, to run the second PSU without it being hooked to a mobo, jumper it like this;

This works GREAT!!:) I now have my 300W pushing my fans and HDD and my 450W pushing everything else. Thanks for the input!!

Shouldn't you be able to hook up a relay to one of the molex's of your main PS? Then once you turn it on, the relay will sense the load and short the 2 wires on the second PS and turn it on.

AT power supplies blowing up? Never heard of that. Doesn't mean its not true though.

I was going to just suggest that you grab an old AT power supply, they usually have a 'dumb' switch on them...plus if you're like me you've got a lot of extras lying around.

I just cut a piece of 18 AWG wire (That's the size of the wire from these 2 ports on my PSU) and plugged one end into #14 and the other into #17, just like in the picture. The article says you may, if your PSU doesn't kick over at this point, have to do this with pins #7 and #8 also

I just cut a 3" strip from one of the other plug ins on the PSU. One of the funny looking ones that I'll never use.

Oh I didnt know you could just cut one the other connectors off and use its wire..Ill try it out =)

hmm i tried the above guys but the fuse just keeps blowing, the fuse in the psu itself

i received teh psu from a friend at work cus he needed a 24 + 4 pin for his board and this was only 20 + 4
the fuse was blown when i got it so maybe a dodgy psu??

any ideas? as i now have a big hole in my case where i cut it out for access
