Hey guys. I just bought a raptor oem 74gb hd.

I have no idea how to set this thing up. I connected the SATA cable and power cable. But I don't know if I should jumper it or not. Right now, it is unjumpered because that is the way it came and I just went and picked it up.

But I tried to install windows with no jumper and I got a fatal error message with a 0x0000007B message. This is the Microsoft knowledge database reference for the error http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324103

It couldn't be a virus because the drive is new. Maybe because I don't have the driver? I don't know. Or could it be giving that error because of the dvd drive that Windows is installing off of?

I don't really know where to go with this. Any direction would be of great help!

Oh, I forgot to say that I have not formatted or partitioned the raptor. Am I going to need to do that? I thought you could do that as the first step for setting up Windows.

You'll need the driver for your SATA controller installed in you Windows OS before attaching the SATA drive. Also make sure you're using the "non-raid" option in the BIOS if your controller has that ability and the "non-raid" driver if your controller has two separate drivers for each operation. There are no jumpers for the new Raptor to worry about.

Oh, if you're doing a fresh install and not a drive copy to the Raptor, you'll need the drivers on a floppy and press F6 to get Windows to install them and then it will recognize the drive. Guess I'll also mention you could slipstream the drivers into Windows and create a new install CD if you're familiar with nLite and all that jazz.

Hmmmm.....Can I use a usb to install the drivers? Or could I possibly take out the Windows cd in the middle of the installation (after I press F6) and load the drivers from a cd?

Thanks for the help Tusken!

I've heard you can, but I've never really looked into or done it myself. I'm sure a quick google search will find the answer.
