The RCA RT2600 can be bought on ebay for $125 shipped or less. I am considering this or a receiver and a pair of HKB 6's.

Now I know that the sound quality of the HKB 6 will beat that of cheap HTS speakers, but I kind of want Surround sound for movies. I listen to some music, but the primary purpose of this system is movies.

Is surround sound worth the decrease in sound quality?

I know it's opinion based, but I'm having trouble deciding,

Thanks, Jonathan.

Go for the high quality HKB 6 route. Surround sound is a nice effect, but I wouldn't say it improves the moviewatching experience. Things that happen on screen are audio spatialized in front of you, and the rest is just ambience.

if you watch action movies the surround sound is IMHO more important than the quality increase you would get with the bookshelves. Also, the HTIB would have a sub, and that will be a big bonus for watching movies.

I think you should go for the quality speakers and reciever. You can always add more speakers later when you have more money.Even in stereo your movies will sound better than 5 cheap speakers and a crappy sub.

At least the system is upgradable this way.Start with a good foundation and you will never be sorry later.

Well I can always add a sub later to my Speaker system.

It's just so hard trying to get quality components on my budget (<$150). But eventually I'll win one of the bidding wars on the receivers.

Thanks, for your 2 cents, Jonathan.

If you know any really kind people with old receivers, hit them up for one. I just got a really nice Pioneer SX-1250 (160W/channel!) for $30.

I personally would get an inexpensive surround receiver and the HK's. For now, you could get even a cheap pair of speakers for 10-30 dollars if you really need surround, and then upgrade later.

I went and did something stupid. I bought a JBL Cinema Propack 600 for $260 shipped. It's way over my budget and I'm trying to get out of it. I'll probably end up having to pay for it though.

EDIT: He's relisting. What a relief.
