ok, I was playing a game on my Compaq, and suddenly I heard a big noise (kindda like a dropping noise). I was like "what the h*** is that !". About 2 seconds after the sound, my comp reboots by itself, so I shut it down to know what it was (the noise came from inside my case). So I open it up, and there, lying on the HD (which is in the bottom of the case), is the Heatsink ! So I check the CPU quickly, and it was still ok (the entire operation was about 4 seconds long, from the noise to the shutdown). So I put it all back together, and it still works ! (thank god !). What I think happened is about a week before, I removed the CPU to check the mobo model (it's a P55TC or P55CT), but I think I forgot to reclip the HSF. The Epoxy glueing it to the Heatspreader must have crapped out and the HS fell off !

well of course we are all glad to know that is still works. even though i know it won't- i would hate to think what would happen it my swifty hit my gf3:eek:

im glad i got my system shut down thing in the bios. is that
what saved your CPU? mine is set at 50C cuz it should never
be that high anyways :p

I once ran my K6-III w/o a heatsink for couple of minutes... but I never let it run windows. I just paused it on the POST screen. after I turned it off, I even could touch it (the CPU)...

I remember the days of my 486DX-2 processor... no heatsink or fan, and you touched it and it was still cool!

I have a P120 hanging around about here - just has a small HS - no fan.

*Sigh*
The days of passive cooling

No, the BIOS on my mobo doesn't have an option to shutdown after a specific temperature. Maybe it was because of Win2k (the "Reboot" option if it's about to get a BSOD), or because the floppy power connector got loose (donno how, but when I opened the case, it was sitting there freely !). Whatever happened, I'm happy it did happen !
