A friend of mine just got him a new Conroe E6600,2 gigs of ram and a Gigabit MB and a 7900GT,we both fly,I cannot run Flight Sim X on my machine with any kind of graphics what so ever turned on,or no traffic,I get 15 to 20FPS,and that is with a EVGA 8800GTX,he on the other hand with his new toy is getting 40 to 60 FPS with most graphics turned at least half way up,I cannot believe the difference between my Opty 170@ 3 GHZ and his stock Conroe, there is no comparison, his AMD system similar to mine was in the same boat as me with FSX.
I really hate to switch but it looks like for future gaming I will have to.
I would not have believed it had I not seen it.

Yeah, Core 2 is real powerhouse. And from what I've seen of the 4x4 systems, not only will you be switching to Intel, but you'll be staying with Intel for the coming years unless AMD comes out with something more cost effective. 4x4 costs twice as much to build and uses double the amount of power just to keep up with Core 2 Quadro. It's a real pig.

that magnitude of fps difference seems a little big, are you sure you're running 3 ghz and there aren't any massive bottlenecks?

but yeah, it seems like AMD is really going to wither away and die, not because they ****ed up, but because C2Ds are just really, really good. No other way to put it.

Wow...I was considering going back to S939 from Socket A...but...holy crap. I can't afford Conroe right now but now I want to. STOP IT OCF STOPPPP!

Oh come on now...you can't honestly say that and go to Intel thinking they were so good and so great THIS WHOLE TIME. The tides are just turning as they always do in the technology war. Intel beat the hell outta their P4's for as long as they good, meanwhile A64 was owning everything up. Now its the other way around. Give it them and it will shift again.

There seems to be something a little odd to me, I mean don't get me wrong I have a E6600 and love it but for there to be that much of a difference seems kinda strange.

I personaly think the 8800 series cards are too much for A64 systems (and if you search way back I said it was coming with the first DX10 card  )

What does your rig score in 3Dmark05 and 3Dmark06?

Got the Intel system up and running, specs are E6600-EVGA 680i-2gigs Buffalo Firestix,I see a big difference,my 3D Mark 06 is 1000 points higher,I can fly FSX with no problems so far,I haven't done much tweaking, other that uping the CPU to 2700 with stock voltage.
I am waiting on my power supply,it died after 4 days use, just sent it back to SilverStone so I won't push it to far with this Antec 480.
So far I am happy:)

Congrats on the new rig. I've been trying to save money to build mine for a while now, but stuff keeps coming up that costs money. It sucks when your life gets in the way of your hobby. :D When you get your new PSU, let us know how high she can go.

This is reasurring. It was Flight Sim X that made me realize how out of date my system was becoming (in sig, except i now run an nforce 4 system with an x850 xt).

I was really close to going to a dual core opteron and the 8800 but decided just to jump ship and come to Intel.

The new system (discussed here: http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=489918) is coming Monday, hopefully i'll be able to put it together that night. I'm not going to OC it xmas break after next week.

For comparisons sake i'm going to put my current system through a bunch of tests. I really want to know how big of a leap i'm going to achieve...i have been worried it was going to be too small for the money i'm spending (i'm a "poor" college kid afterall). But this seems to indicate it wont be.

I tried running FSX on my 2600+ R9800 rig when it was running, and it was definately a slap in the face. I couldn't believe how much candy I had to turn off just to get over 20fps!
